2014 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

Last updated on Jun-23-2014 by Kimra Schleicher

Everyone knows the value of Jimmy Graham. He is the top TE in the NFL. Sorry Gronk fans, but Graham is the overall better TE. He has missed only one game in the past three seasons. All he did in 2013 was catch 86 passes for 1,215 yards while scoring 16 touchdowns. The biggest distraction of the season is Graham's contract. The Saints franchise-tagged him as a TE; however, the NFLPA filed a grievance over whether he is a TE or a WR. Everyone expects a deal to get done before the beginning of camp though. Graham will be drafted by the end of round one. Your decision lies in which stud RB or WR you will give up to have Graham on your team. If you are willing to give up an elite, first-round stud, then by all means, draft Graham and don't look back.

Latest Update

Jul-25-14 New England TE Rob Gronkowski not 100% yet

After the Patriot's second training camp practice on Friday, Rob Gronkowski stated, "If it was 100 percent, I'd be doing ever single little thing." The New England Patriot's tight end has only been participating in individual drills. While the team drills are taking place he has been forced to watch from the sidelines. Gronkowski states that there is no timetable for him to start taking repetitions in team drills, but he will be dressed in full pads on Saturday to practice running routes and cutting. Gronkowski says, "I'm going to go full speed and I'm going to keep smashing and bashing everything I do."

Fantasy Analysis:

When Gronkowski is healthy, he is one of the biggest red-zone threats in the NFL. In the three seasons before his injury, Gronkowski never caught less than 10 touchdowns. He is as reliable as they come and if injuries were not a concern, he would easily be coming off the board after or even before Jimmy Graham. With a current ADP of 30, Gronkowski has a lot of question marks. His play style is extremely physical and there's no telling whether he can hold up for an entire season. If you love high risk-high reward players, Gronkowski is your obvious target. If you don't fancy risk, however, I would stay away from the tight end.

Month Position Franchise/Comments
2013 FFToolbox Staff Mock Draft #1
June 18th, 2013
2.08 DLF.com - TheFFGhost - Grabbing what looks like the top TE this season at 2.08 is very tough to pass on. While this isn't a TE premium league many of the super elite WRs are gone and the drop-off between TE1 and TE2 this season could be very significant.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #2
July 2nd 2013
2.03 Fantasy Football QB - The TE position is often the weakest in terms of elite options and consistent fantasy production. With the Patriots TE situation, Jimmy Graham's value may only go up from here. I see him creep to the 1st round as we get closer to September (even in non-TE premium leagues).
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #1
June 25th, 2013
2.04 FFMagicMan - Jimmy Graham and I didn't even have to think twice. For me, he is head and shoulders (and maybe a balky back) above the rest of the TE crowd in 2013. Love him in the early 2nd round any day of the week.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3
July 9th, 2013
2.05 DraftSharks - Graham shouldn't stay on the board this long. Gronk's back trouble makes the Saints' TE the most dominant #1 at any fantasy position heading into this season. Despite skipping the RBs in Round 1, I can't say that I regret this pick at all. He belongs in the 2nd half of Round 1 in PPR drafts.
