2013 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on Oct-21-2013 by Chris Weeks

Update (10/21): To say Wallace has been a disappointment for fantasy owners this seasoun would be an under statement. Through six games Wallace has three games with fewer than 25 yards receiving and he has found the end zone just once. There have been a couple of bright moments with 100 yard games against the Colts and Ravens so there is hope Wallace's season could end on a high note. It's clean quarterback Ryan Tannehill like Wallace but the timing between the two is still a work in progress. Wallace's second half of the season will only be as good as Tannehill's and if the beginning the season is a predictor of the future then now may be the time to trade Wallace.

Profile: We all know Wallace went to Miami, but what we don't understand is why he went to Miami? The Dolphins have a very limited run game and a quarterback who has played a total of 34 games under center in his lifetime. We feel pretty much the same way as most do about Wallace's fantasy value this season: a few games he'll score a ton and in the rest he'll do little. If you're an all or nothing owner then Mike is your man. I'm not sure that will win you a championship, so you may want to reserve Wallace's time in your starting lineup for the right matchup. As a number one receiver Wallace has value, but just how valuable is yet to be seen with so much uncertainty under center and in the backfield.

Update: Chemsitry was lacking early in the pre-season, however Wallace and Tannehill seem to be making up for that recently. With the loss of TE Dustin Keller, Mike Wallace gets a bump in our rankings this week.

Latest Update

Apr-23-14 Dolphins WR Mike Wallace excited for new, big-play offense

Bill Lazor has replaced Mike Sherman as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator this year, and one of the differences between their systems appears to be that Lazor's stresses more down-the-field throws.
When wide receiver Mike Wallace was asked Tuesday to describe the style of Lazor's offense, he said, "My style: big-play offense. I see Ryan [Tannehill] is excited about it. He's called me eight, nine times."

Fantasy Analysis:

Head coach Joe Philbin has downplayed how different this year's offense will be from last year's, but Tannehill also mentioned that deep throws will be more prevalent. That's nice. Now the young quarterback and rich wideout have to connect on a higher percentage of those throws. That was a major issue last year; we'll see if they have better chemistry in 2014.
The Dolphins giving Wallace more chances this season to make big chunk plays is good news for his fantasy value, but I'd still draft him as just a WR3 because I can't trust Tannehill yet to complete enough of those chances to make it matter.

5.01 FFToolbox - Jeb Gorham - Wallace will be with a new team, but he is a #1 receiver on the depth chart. He has his risks/rewards with the likelihood that he will have up and down games given his QB situation. However, I like his upside and figure there is enough depth at wide out to grab several and play the match-ups.

6.01 KFFSC - This should be interesting. The Miami offense is coming together nicely and Tannehill will welcome the deep threat Wallace brings. I think Tannehill leans on Wallace and his speed. Wallace may not get a ton of receptions, but my first two WR picks will and that makes Wallace a great WR3 for me with a lot of big game potential.
