2013 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on May-28-2013 by Matt De Lima

A career year in 2011 faded quickly into memory for Matthew Stafford. His touchdown totals dropped from 41 to 20 in 2012. Injuries to WR Nate Burleson and the unreliable WR Titus Young left few options for the Lions' passing attack. WR Calvin Johnson will keep Stafford's numbers from completely falling off the cliff though. Burleson is now back and the addition of RB Reggie Bush should bolster the short passing game. One great thing about Stafford is that volume is not a problem as he led the league in pass attempts in each of the last two seasons. Look for him to rebound this year, but falling short of his production two seasons ago.

7.08 Draft TV - Drafting a QB is like walking a fine tight rope. Get too aggressive and you lose value elsewhere. Dilly dally and you'll be left with someone unimpressive. I've found the 7th to 8th round is just right. Stafford was the bottom of a massive QB tier for me with his high load of passes and every bit as good as QBs who went before him
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #1
June 25th, 2013
7.12 Bruno Boys - I started getting a little nervous after seeing a few QBs come off the board and decided to grab Stafford here. I could have waited until the 9th but with everyone picking twice before me it was tough to hold off. The scoring settings are yardage and interception friendly so I really wanted a QB that could threaten to throw for 5000 yards and his share of multi TD games. Stafford easily meets those requirements and should destroy his 2012 numbers. He adds Reggie Bush as a safety valve and gets a healthy receiving corps to throw to. Titus Young is gone and Ryan Broyles is poised to breakout alongside Burleson and Megatron. Top 5 seems to be a probable finish if everything holds together.

10.03 FootballDiehards - Despite ending up 33 yards short of becoming the first player to pass for 5,000 yards in successive seasons, and leading the league in completions, his overall efficiency ranked 22nd. He had some things working against him -- a depleted receiver corps, slumping TEs and a spotty run game. He also still gets happy feet at times and rushes throws. His accuracy decreased. His game management needs work, too. But does anybody doubt the totals will be there? And in the 10th round? I'm good with that.
