2013 Outlook: Over the Hill (decreased production)

When the 2010 season began, had I told you Derrick Ward would be the Texans' second leading rusher you would have called me nuts. I don't believe many people picked Ward to carry the ball 50 times for 315 yards and finish the season as the team's number two back. This season I believe we'll see numbers slightly off what we saw last year from Ward. Derrick will have a few games with 50-75 yards and occasionally find the end zone. I don't expect him to play as big a role in the offense this year because the Texans will likely use Ben Tate and Ward to spell Foster. This means Ward will have to put up respectable numbers with fewer opportunities. If I had to draft today then I would likely handcuff Foster with Tate. However, if during preseason football we see Tate is not ready for football then I'd go with Ward.

In the early stages of camp, it appears Ward is the number two back. I don't know if the coaching staff likes what Ward brings to the field better than Tate right now or if Tate is just not ready for the NFL, but if you're looking to handcuff Foster then it's Ward you want (at least for the time being). I think once Tate is healthy he will be the number two back, but until I see Tate on the field I can't tell owners to draft him.
