2014 Outlook: Quality BackupLast updated on Jul-15-2014 by Rob Warner
Peyton's little brother posted the worst season of his 10-year career in 2013, as he finished with 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. Eli completed 58-percent of passes for 3,818 yards (238 YPG) and only topped 20 fantasy points in one game (Week 1). He hasn't missed a game over the past nine seasons, but turned 33 in January and is coming off ankle surgery in April (recovery bears watching in training camp). The Giants' passing game has a new offensive coordinator in Ben McAdoo (Packers' QB coach the past two seasons) who is apparently installing a quick-hitting passing game that could bode well for Manning, considering his lack of mobility behind one of the weaker offensive lines in the NFL (ranked 28th overall by Pro Football Focus and 31st in pass-blocking). Veteran WR Hakeem Nicks (now in Indy) will be replaced by rookie Odell Beckham Jr. (first-round pick from LSU) and the the G-Men's tight end situation is a major question mark with Adrien Robinson (no catches over his first two seasons) currently sitting atop the depth chart. Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan return and the free agent acquisition of RB Rashad Jennings (36 receptions in 2013) could also assist the younger Manning's return to fantasy relevance. The aging signal-caller is best drafted as a backup since he's likely to rebound with a solid group of receiving options at his disposal.
Editor's note: At his best, Manning can be a capable fantasy backup on your roster or even sneak into the starting lineup when the matchup is in his favor. Turnovers remain a primary concern.
Cruz says that Giant's offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo's new offense is "definitely a little bit more pass happy than what we've had in the past." McAdoo is in the midst of installing an up-temp, West Coast offense, one in which Cruz says he believes he can catch 100 balls. "If I get 100, hopefully I can get around 1,500 yards," Cruz said. The last time Cruz approached those numbers was his rookie 2011 season, in which he caught 82 balls for 1,536 yards.Fantasy Analysis:
McAdoo's scheme will apparently make the Giants a pass-focused team, which should help Cruz' statistical figures. Still, 100 catches and 1,500 yards seems a little outlandish. Cruz has averaged 1,000 yards and 7 touchdowns the last two seasons, and that's about what should be expected of him this year as well, which would put him at low-end WR2 status. And given Giants QB Eli Manning's recent comments that he doesn't feel totally comfortable in the new system, it's clear that there's still a learning curve for the Giants to overcome before things start clicking. Cruz is currently ranked 23rd among receivers.

|12.10||Gridiron Experts - This one hurt. Zach got me. It's almost as if he listened to me on Boston radio Saturday morning talking about Dobson being a nice sleeper for the Pats. I wasn't too crazy about many of the position players available here, so I'll just grab my top-rated player. Eli has been a consistent fantasy starter for years. He only has to be good for me for one week.|

|11.11||World Fantasy Rankings #4 - I used to avoid Eli Manning in drafts but as he has gotten older, I have come around to his FF potential. He was lackluster without a healthy Nicks last year but that will not be a problem in 2013. If David Wilson is the explosive player we think he will be, it should open up more passing lanes and play action passes downfield for Manning. You may even get a few cheap long TD's from Eli "dumpers" to Wilson, much like Jamaal Charles has done in KC.|
