2012 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on Aug-06-2012 by Jeb Gorham

I do not think you can go wrong drafting Antonio Gates. Gates is still on top of the pile when it comes to TEs in San Diego. The team has a slew of tight ends who can play the position well. Gates' health, especially his foot has been of issue in past seasons. Team reports state that his foot issues are under control and he is healthier than anticipated. Gates will start with McMichael, Rosario and Sperry competing for back-up.

5.04 FFToday.com - From a pure numbers standpoint, Antonio Gates is not the ideal value pick here. He is amongst a pretty crowded group of similarly projected TE like Jason Witten, Aaron Hernandez, Jermichael Finley amongst others. However, no player at any position was really standing out for us at this point, the most significant being WR Antonio Brown. I'm expecting a big bounce back year from this former stud. He's another year away from his foot problems that slowed him the last two seasons, and the departure of Vincent Jackson and Mike Tolbert should persuade Philip Rivers to look to his primary security blanket even more than he otherwise would. I'll be happier letting Brown go to someone else and settling for a lower ranked WR, than I would be letting Gates pass me by.

6.03 CBSSports.com - All reports are that he's healthy (for now) but he could challenge Gronk and Graham for the No.1 TE spot if he plays close to 16 games.

5.04 FFToday.com - I had Michael Turner, Michael Vick and a pair of TE pre-drafted at this pick - in reverse order. Gates was my number one choice although it was really dead even between him and Aaron Hernandez. Already certain I'm going to get raked over the coals for this draft, I'm not going to settle for an average RB in Turner (had he made it) or C.J. Spiller just to finally address the position. I'd rather get players capable of being the best at their position while they are still available, of which Gates/Hernandez/Vick fit the bill.
