2013 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

Last updated on Jun-29-2013 by Ben Standig

This just in: the fantasy tight end position is not a deep one this year - and that assessment initially came when we all believed New England had two strong options. Now, hmmm. There is the one true stud in Jimmy Graham, but then lots of uncertainty even those options boasting considerable potential. There is no doubt what Witten provides; last season he hauled in a career-best 110 receptions for 1,039. He's missed just one game in 10 seasons. Then again, his 9.4 ypc was the lowest of his career and Witten had just three touchdowns. At 31, there is no question that father time will start winning the war soon, but for now Witten can dominate another battle or two. It is conceivable he could become a top-3 option by August, but he remains a strong TE1 regardless.

5.03 Gridiron Experts - What was I saying about me avoiding tight ends? Never mind that. We're conservatively projecting Witten at around a 90-1100-5 clip, making him roughly the same value of a top 20 wide receiver in a PPR format. When ScoutPro selfishly stole Pierre Garcon right in front of me, I went ahead and nabbed my TE4 to play in a flex spot.

5.02 CBSSports - The downside with Witten is he doesn't score touchdowns. The upside is he had 110 catches last season and at least 94 catches in three of the past four years. He's a volume tight end, and if he somehow manages an extra touchdown or two this season he's going to challenge for being the best player at his position.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3

6.01 KFFL - Tim - Until Dallas develops a stable WR3, Witten will command elite PPR numbers. His touchdown total might not reach 10, but he'll be good for double-digit points most weeks. Along the same lines of the Brees pick -- the market was deflated, so I took advantage.
