2011 Outlook: Gamble (high risk)

Following an injury plagued, controversy riddled past couple of seasons in Washington, It is almost shocking that Portis survived the Redskins' offseason roster purge, but for now the world's oldest 28-year old stays on with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. Portis rushed for 494 yards and one score in eight games last season before a severe concussion got the best of the eight-year pro and he missed the second half of the season. The one-time flashy back is now more of a pounder after losing much of his quickness over the years. Combined with his often criticized work ethic, it came as no surprise that the Redskins brought in competition for Portis this season (though for now CP is saying all the right things). We have all seen even the most ordinary of backs succeed in a Mike Shanahan system (and there is some reason to project Portis having a motivated campaign), but the "gamble" is whether he truly has enough gas left in the tank to even take advantage of the opportunity. His upside is an LT2 season a year ago with a lot of touchdowns, but unless he wins the job outright with a back to the future-type training camp, Portis is the type of aging back that provides diminishing returns and should be avoided.
