2013 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-in
The Panthers have not had an impact tight end since Wesley Walls, who was released after a lengthy career back in 2002. That may change with the addition of pass catching specialist Jeremy Shockey this season. Shockey inked a one year deal with Carolina on March 3rd and will be reunited with Panthers offensive coordinator Rod Chudzinski, who was his position coach at the University of Miami.
New Head Coach Ron Rivera immediately set out to acquire an impact tight end for the Panthers and Shockey fits the bill. "We are very pleased to add Jeremy to our football team," Rivera said in a statement released by the Panthers. "He is a highly competitive player with a good skill set and a wealth of experience. He should make a solid contribution to our offense."
Shockey caught 41 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last season with New Orleans. Shockey was released this offseason after the emergence of rookie Jimmy Graham gave the Saints a reason to go in a new direction at the position. Shockey is not the player he once was, but he still has something left in the tank and is worth targeting on the wavier wire if he has an impact early in the season, or as a quality bye week fill-in this season.Last updated on Jun-01-2011 by George Bissell
