2014 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)

Last updated on Jul-08-2014 by Daniel Kalles

After a very quiet rookie season, Cecil Shorts had a breakout season in his second year, becoming the big-play receiver that the Jags were looking for. In only 14 games, he averaged 17.8 yards per reception on 979 yards, while scoring seven touchdowns; Based on those numbers, there were high expectations going into 2013. While he did catch 11 more passes despite playing in one fewer game, his yards and touchdowns dropped big time as he only averaged 11.8 yards per reception. Shorts is the unquestioned No, 1 receiver and should be drafted as a No. 3 fantasy receiver or flex option. Based on his numbers from last season and the plan to line him up more often in the slot, it likely means he should get a healthy dose of receptions. His value will be higher in PPR leagues. His overall position rank will be somewhere between 35 to 40.

Editor's note: Dynasty owners should be dumping Shorts as soon as possible. Even if you don't like Lee or Robinson, the Jags appear ready and willing to tear it all down.

Jul-22-14 Jaguars WR Ace Sanders facing 4-game suspension, taking leave of absence

Jaguars wide receiver Ace Sanders told reporters Tuesday that he is taking a leave of absence from football to handle some "personal issues." He also said he is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
"I've decided to go seek help and get that attention," Sanders said. "I should be fine. ... I've made some mistakes that I could have handled a little differently."
Sanders said he will seek "counseling, anybody that can give me insight" during training camp. He will likely be away from the team for all of camp and doesn't know if he will remain in Jacksonville while addressing his issues. However, Sanders said he is looking forward to playing again. He won't be eligible to play this season until Oct. 5.

Fantasy Analysis:

Sanders caught a respectable 51 passes for 484 yards as a rookie last season. He had minimal fantasy value prior to this development. The Jags' top three wideouts are slated to be Cecil Shorts followed by rookies Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson.

7.01 FFToolbox - Jeb Gorham - Shorts averaged almost 70 yards and about 4 receptions per game with 7 TDs last season. If you take out his two low performing games these numbers jump significantly (about 81 yards and 4.5 receptions per game). First pick of the seventh round felt really good here. I would like to see his TDs jump this season, but all-in-all I can deal with his numbers and he is fairly consistent.

5.10 Fantasy Football QB - So many good players taken in the 5th! I could have reached in the 4th, but my need at RB prevented that from happening. I took a long reach for Shorts III. Perhaps too long... I'd actually prefer Shorts's situation if Blackmon wasn't suspended as I don't like the idea of him facing double-coverage. Still, in terms of consistency last year, he ranked in between Welker and Andre Johnson... yeah, not bad.

6.07 DynastyLeague Football - Blackmon might be the sexy pick but Shorts is the guy to own in Jax. Even with God awful QB play last year, Shorts performed like a beast.

July 9th, 2013
6.08 TheHuddle - Wanted Brown to slide but missed by 5 picks. Shorts should be solid enough as a WR3.
