The Staggie's Mock Draft
Average Rank: 2.8 out of 5 (5 votes) -- Rank This Mock Draft
Author's Comments*Carolina traded their 1st Round pick (11th Overall) to San Francisco **Chicago traded their 1st Round pick (17th Overall) to Denver ***Denver traded their 1st Round pick (29th Overall) to SeattleRaiders - Logic and team needs point to either an Offensive or Defensive lineman but Al Davis thinks differently so I used his logic in taking the work out machine, Taylor Mays. 49ers - I think San fran would be eager to take two players with both of their high picks to aid their pass rush. Kindle is the perfect undersized pass rushing End who might work out well at the 3-4 OLB position. Arthur Jones has the speed to get into the backfield but also possesses the size and strength to hold-up against the run at the 3-4 End position. You'll notice towards the end of the draft the amount of DE's I'm giving away even though there are some solid WR's available. There is an absurd amount of college 4-3 Ends who aren't that big but have all the tools and abilities to shift to 3-4 OLB. Look for alot of that, the 3-4 teams going for the undersized 4-3 DE's. Vikings - I have them taking a QB as Tarvaris Jackson is not the future and neither is Sage Rosenfels. I doubt Favre will be playing till his 45.
1 - TB: Suh, Ndamukong - DT - Nebraska
Arguably the most talented player coming in. Big, fast, strong, disruptive & versatile, he can play anywhere along the line. He is an impact player. Only drawback is his tendency to attack the line high, relying on his immense upper body strength to overpower O-linemen, this won't work in the pro's. Defense won the Bucs their Superbowl, they start rebuilding it now. 2 - CLE: Berry, Eric - FS - Tennessee
Like the Bucs, the Browns are awful and need a lot of work. And going up against Flacco, Roethlisberger & Palmer 6 times a year is not ideal. They need some serious pass defense and Eric Berry is a great start. The only rival to Suh in terms of pure potential. Berry is a play making ball hawk in the Ed Reed mould. He'll solidify Cleveland's soft secondary & make an impact. 3 - STL: McCoy, Colt - QB - Texas
Now this is a huge reach. Bradford is without a doubt the most talented QB set to enter the draft but he has recent injury problems and the Rams have had to deal with injuries to their QB all too often. Between McCoy, Locker & Clausen, McCoy is the only one that is worth top 5 money. While not possessing a big arm he is pin-point accurate, mobile & a hardworking natural leader. The Rams running game will compliment him immensely. 4 - KC: Okung, Russell - T - Oklahoma St.
The Chiefs have a horrible defense but their pass protection has become questionable at best lately. Cassell gets very little time. Okung is athletic and a powerful mauler with good feet. He is franchise material. 5 - DET: Williams, Trent - T - Oklahoma
The Lions have their star receiver, a feature back, a playmaking Tight End & a franchise QB. The final piece in the puzzle; a franchise Tackle to watch their young guns blindside. The rebuilding of the Offense should be complete. 6 - OAK: Mays, Taylor - FS - USC
Oakland desperately need an Offensive or Defensive lineman. Unfortuanatley they also need some work on the Secondary. Taylor Mays is a Safety. Taylor Mays is big, Taylor Mays is fast. Taylor Mays is strong. Taylor Mays is Al's guy. Raider Nation shall once again lament a wasted pick. 7 - WAS: Bradford, Sam - QB - Oklahoma
Jason Campbell isn't doing it. He lacks confidence in himself & his teammates. The 'Skins will take a go at Bradford or McCoy, whomever St. Louis pass up on. Regardless of an injury bug, Bradford is the best QB available. 8 - SEA: Bulaga, Bryan - T - Iowa
Future HOFer, Walter Jones, has one season left in the tank. He'll be a huge loss. The 'Hawks take his replacement this year. Bulaga will spend a year at RT, learning from one of the games greatest Offensive Tackles before starting his career as a franchise LT. 9 - TEN: McCoy, Gerald - DT - Oklahoma
The Titans really had no idea how valuable Haynesworth was. Kyle van den Bosch had 4 sacks his whole time in Arizona. He had 30+ in 5 seasons alongside Haynesworth. This year he has ZERO. McCoy is marginally beaten out by Suh. Not as fast or versatile but never the less, he is an anchor to build your 4-3 line around. 10 - BUF: Davis, Anthony - T - Rutgers
The Bills could do with a QB but Clausen & Locker are not worthy of a top 10 pick yet. And it doesn't matter whom they put behind center, that offensive line is horrid and will give no QB a chance. If Davis comes out early, they'll take him. If not they'll pick up either of Williams or Bulaga if they're passed up. If no quality Tackles are available, maybe a QB or DE. 11 - JAX: Tebow, Tim - QB - Florida
This is a reach & about 30 picks too high. But Tebow is not entirely void of potential. But the reason the Jags take him is to get fans in the stands. He is a local bou who is loved by the local college crowd now he'll play for the local team and bring his followers. He might even turn out like Vick, a highlight reel all on his own, pull the crowds and win the odd play-off game. 12 - SF: Kindle, Sergio - OLB - Texas
The 9ers are solid on defense but they lack sufficient pass defense & that big playmaker. Kindle is big, fast and impressively quick over open spaces. The perfect Strongside, pass rushing 3-4 OLB. Singletary is a disciplanarian who'll be able to iron out Kindle's character flaws and get the best out of him. 13 - SF: Jones, Arthur - DT - Syracuse
Some liken him to a poor man's Suh. What a compliment. Quick enough to get into the backfield yet strong enough to hold up against the run. A perfect 3-4 End. The 9ers will add some serious defensive talent high in the draft. 14 - MIA: Spikes, Brandon - ILB - Florida
Spikes is a natural leader and a fine footballer. The 'Phins will add him to their LB crew to compliment Crowder. 15 - NYJ: Weatherspoon, Sean - OLB - Missouri
Weatherspoon is without doubt, the best OLB available. He'll strengthen the Jets LB crew. 16 - ARI: Hughes, Jerry - DE - TCU
255lbs with a 4,7 40 time. He is big and sick fast! The ideal 3-4 OLB. He'll be the future star of the 'Cards 3-4 defense. Think Lamarr Woodley. 17 - DEN: Mcclain, Rolando - ILB - Alabama
Not many things this team needs. Ayers & Dumervil have the outside slots locked down. Adding Mcclain, a sure tackler, will only serve tighten up the inside and make that LB crew ever more effective. 18 - SD: Spiller, C.J. - RB - Clemson
Whatever L.T. says, he is not the same anymore. And Darren Sproles is only 2 years away from the 30 mark. Spiller is the best RB available and he'll be their new feature back of the future. 19 - BAL: Bryant, Dez - WR - Oklahoma St.
Flacco has done a great job with a veteran receiver and a bunch of bit part players but it's time the Ravens reward him with a new weapon. Bryant is a play maker with oodles of potential. 20 - GB: Capers, Selvish - OT - West Virginia
They might want to add some depth to their new 3-4 D but when your start QB is on course to be sacked 60+ times (31 times through week 8), you are taking huge risks on his health. Capers is not elite Left Tackle material but he'll be a fine Right Tackle who can play LT when required and right now, the Pack CANNOT afford to pass up any player that might solidify their offensive line in anyway. 21 - ATL: Robinson, Patrick - CB - Florida State
The difference between the Falcons and the Saints is their secondary. It is very thin and very short on real talent. Robinsom is the best of what is a very thin position in this years dratft. 22 - HOU: Hardy, Greg - DE - Mississippi
Nothing wrong with the Texans offense but they are struggling to slow down opposing teams offenses. They'll continue to draft on D untill it is rock solid. Hardy is the best DE around. A pass rush specialist who alongside Mario Williams, will create containment issues with opposition Offensive lines. 23 - NYG: Haden, Joe - CB - Florida
Their secondary has been exposed terribly. Not much available at the S/CB positions but Haden does rate highly and he'll add some depth and be a future starter. 24 - CIN: Dwyer, Jonathan - RB - Georgia Tech
They might want to give Palmer another receiver or a TE but they cannot be too focused on passing. They need to be able to run effectively. Dwyer is solid & a hard runner. If Benson continues to deliver, they could form a formidable run attack. If not, Dwyer is the perfect work horse to carry the load. 25 - DAL: Lang, Brandon - DE - Troy
Another undersized DE projecting as an OLB. He is big, he is fast, he is strong. He'll be a great compliment to Ware at the 3-4 OLB position. 26 - SEA: Clausen, Jimmy - QB - Notre Dame
The steal of the round. Clausen has immense talent but might not be ready to be a pro starter just yet. Hasselbeck has injury problems lately and is not young anymore. He'll back Matt up for a season or two, learning from the Pro-Bowler before he is ready to start. Seattle are bulding for the future. 27 - NE: Black, Ciron - OL - LSU
They might want to add some players on defense, they lost alot but it is their offensive line that made tham & Tom Brady such formidable foes. Black is not a specialist at any position just yet but he can play either Guard or Tackle and learning from Light, Kaczur & Koppen will be a huge benefit to his career. 28 - PHI: Wootton, Corey - DE - Northwestern
He is big and extremely quick for his position & size. he is a pass rush specialist who will fit in perfectly with the Eagles blitzing tendencies. 29 - MIN: Locker, Jake - QB - Washington
Favre will not be there till he is 42. Jackson & Rosenfels are not the guys of the future either. Locker, or whichever decent QB slips this far, will carry his clipboard for a year or two, just like Rodgers and will be a fine starting QB in 2 years. 30 - IND: Iupati, Mike - OG - Idaho
Might be a reach and a wasted pick but the only place Indy need help is the running game. Not since Edge have the Colts been able to run effectively. And even if it is Peyton Manning, you can't always rely on passing. Iupati is monstrous and a road grader. He'll bust some holes and help kickstart Addai & Brown. He's the best Guard available and he'll go early second if not taken here. 31 - PIT: Cunningham, Jermaine - DE - Florida
Steelers need to get young on defense. A college DE but he is perfectly suited to 3-4 OLB. He has the speed to be an effective pass rusher and having Harrison & Woodley there to help with the transition is not bad at all. 32 - NO: Graham, Brandon - OLB - Michigan
He is actually 275lbs and a DE. He is amazingly quick for his position and will further bolster the Saints ever improving defense. User CommentsWednesday, November 4, 2009 10:43 AM
Below Average -- Looks okay but Snead has been playing poorly. Clausen & Locker are most likely first rounders definitely ahead of Snead. Lupati from idaho is a huge reach Wednesday, November 4, 2009 8:57 PM
Above Average -- General like. Good explinations for picks. like your Al Davis rationale. Gs are picked in late 1st round occasionally. I do believe Clauson goes before Snead Capt Who Thursday, November 5, 2009 2:04 AM
Poor -- The picks are a mess there not selected by the regular season record but by how far they go in the playoffs so why do you have from picks 28 to 30 NFC teams doesnt make sense Thursday, November 5, 2009 3:17 AM
Average -- I am using the current overall standings but I see your point towards the end. I will re-order the "play-off" spots so that it is more realistic. - The Staggie Thursday, November 5, 2009 9:24 AM
Above Average -- The Rams wont pick at 3, they will either pick at 1 or 2. But got most of these right. Rate this NFL Mock Draft
