Kyle Blask's Mock Draft (Round 1)

<< Previous Mock Draft View all User NFL Mock Drafts Next Mock Draft >>

1 - KC: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
Since they are most likely losing Branden Albert to free agency it makes sense to take a Left Tackle, who also happens to be the best prospect available. Joeckel is the prototype offensive lineman in today's pass first NFL
2 - JAX: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
This team is a disaster on both sides of the ball. Star Lotulelei has a similar game to Haloti Ngata and would provide them with a physical presence of the defensive line
3 - OAK: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
Oakland was the 2nd worst team in the NFL in terms of sacks last season so Defensive End is an immediate position of need. Moore was highly productive in the SEC and should translate well to the NFL
4 - PHI: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
The Eagles have a lot of holes to fill, with cornerback being one of the most glaring. Asomugha has certainly not lived up to his contract and needs to be replaced. Milliner is a big, physical cornerback who is capable of matching up with opponent's top receivers
5 - DET: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
After cutting Vanden Bosch the Lions need to find a replacement. Cornerback is also a need but none are worth taking at this point. Werner is a disruptive, high motor player who can get to the QB
6 - CLE: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Browns have some nice young players in their secondary but need to improve their pass rush. This is a bit of a reach as Mingo is far from a finished product, but compares favorably to Von Miller in terms of size and athleticism
7 - ARI: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
The Cardinals desperately need a QB, however a case can be made that their offensive line is one of the worst in history. Eric Fisher is a natural athlete at Left Tackle who will be a starter from Day 1
8 - BUF: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
With the 8th pick the first QB finally comes off the board. With a new coaching staff in place the Bills will look to move forward with a new signal caller. Geno Smith is a mobile, accurate QB who provides an upgrade over Ryan Fitzpatrick
9 - NYJ: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
The Jets are in need of edge rushers and Jarvis Jones might be the best in the entire draft. A spinal stenosis condition might drop him down some draft boards but at this point it is worth the risk. The condition has not been an issue for the last few years
10 - TEN: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Tennessee needs to get it's running game going again and who better to take than Warmack. Guards do not normally go this high but he is a special talent.
11 - SD: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
The Chargers offensive line has been in shambles for the past few years. Rivers needs more time to throw so why not solidify the Left Tackle position. Johnson is a fast riser who offers mobility and athleticism at the position
12 - MIA: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Tannehill showed promise last season for the Dolphins, now they need to get him a legitimate number one target. Patterson has he perfect height/speed combo to warrant this selection
13 - TB: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
Tampa Bay needs an upgrade to their pass rush which finished last in the NFC in terms of sacks. Jordan is an explosive player who has a high ceiling and will only get better
14 - CAR: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
Carolina's first priority is getting more stout upfront against the run. I also like Jesse Williams from Alabama in this spot but I think Hankins will be the pick
15 - NO: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
Switching to a 3-4 defense means New Orleans must find a pass rushing outside linebacker. Ansah is a beast who already has an NFL body and will continue to improve with experience
16 - STL: Keenan Allen, WR, California
This could finally be the year the Rams get Sam Bradford a legitimate number one target. Allen is a good athlete who had a very productive career at Cal. Him and Amendola would form a very nice duo for years to come
17 - PIT: Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama
Pittsburgh has gotten old over the last few years on defense and need to replace many aging veterans. Williams can step in right away and fill the role Hampton has held down for the last decade
18 - DAL: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The Cowboys will need a disruptive defensive tackle as they switch to a 4-3 defense. Richardson fits that mold perfectly and will help against both the run and the pass
19 - NYG: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
The Giants have had a glaring hole at Middle Linebacker since the retirement of Antonio Pierce. Te'o might have been slightly exposed in the title game, however he was very good in all the other games. He will greatly improve their line-backing corps right away
20 - CHI: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
Since there are no Left Tackles left worth drafting this high it makes since to find a replacement for Urlacher. Ogletree brings excellent speed and versatility to this defense
21 - CIN: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas
The Bengals need an upgrade at safety and Vaccaro can step in as a Day 1 starter. He offers enough versatility to play either safety position
22 - STL: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
After getting a new target for Bradford it makes sense to get him some help on the O-Line. Cooper has the versatility to play any of the interior line positions and is an excellent athlete for his size
23 - MIN: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Minnesota once had the most feared defensive line in the NFL, however that is not the case anymore. Floyd can play next to Kevin Williams for the next few years before eventually replacing him
24 - IND: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
The Colts surprised many people last season and certainly have found their franchise QB. Defense is still a big concern with the cornerbacks being particularly weak. Rhodes is a giant for a cornerback who would immediately upgrade their physicality and athleticism at the position
25 - SEA: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
The Seahawks have a very complete team that is good on both sides of the ball. Chris Clemons may not be ready for next season, and Bruce Irvin is exclusively a pass rusher. Montgomery is a solid all-around defensive end who made plays every week in the SEC
26 - GB: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
Green Bay has needs on both sides of the ball. If they were to get a strong running game to complement their passing attack it would keep their defense off the field. Lacy fits this description perfectly, as a versatile back who can push the pile for the tough yards
27 - HOU: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
Injuries decimated this line-backing group as the season went on. Kevin Minter is a beast who excels against the run. He was LSU's most consistent player last year who would form a dynamic duo with Cushing on the interior
28 - DEN: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Needing an upgrade on the interior Denver opts for Kawann Short. Since this team is in a win-now mode they take a player who can step in and improve the defense right away
29 - NE: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
As soon as Talib went down vs Baltimore this secondary was picked to shreds. Banks excelled against the best competition on a week to week basis often locking down the opponents top receiver
30 - ATL: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
With Tony Gonzalez most likely retiring this team needs to find a play-making TE to replace him. Eifert can be an effective player over the middle for an explosive offense that features Roddy White and Julio Jones on the outside
31 - SF: Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
Getting a space eater like Jenkins to occupy blockers would allow even more versatility for this defense. With Justin Smith getting older it is very important to get young difference makers on the defensive line
32 - BAL: Matt Elam, SS, Florida
Middle Linebacker is an immediate need for the Ravens however there are none worth taking at this point. Ed Reed is also getting close to retirement and Baltimore needs to find a replacement. Matt Elam is a hard hitter who is also solid in coverage.
