4/7 FinkMcWinkle's Fun w/Trades Mock Draft
4/7 FinkMcWinkle's Mock Draft
1 - KC: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
Kansas City is in the midst of a regime change and badly needs a quarterback. Is Geno Smith the best player on the board? Not even close. But the lack of can't-miss guys on the board really stunts the trade market for the Chiefs, and they need to grab a quarterback for Andy Reid to develop. This is a reach, but ultimately it's the pick that sets the tone for the Andy Reid era.
2 - JAX: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
Jacksonville's pass rush is awful. Werner produced very well at Florida State and is a complete defensive end who'll help revitalize their defense.
3 - OAK: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
Lotulelei gives Oakland a defensive cornerstone to build around. You win in the NFL with a defensive line that can dominate the opposing offense, and Lotulelei looks like he can be the main cog on Oakland's.
4 - PHI: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
Joeckel is arguably the best player in the draft. Philadelphia's offensive line needs have been well documented, and they can't go wrong with Joeckel shoring up either end of their line.
5 - DET: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
Cliff Avril may be gone after this year, and Kyle Vanden Bosch is old. The Lions need to keep their defensive line's prodcution going in a division with weak pass protection to help their defense compete. Moore was hugely productive this past season at Texas A&M, and would fit right in as an impact pass rusher.
6 - CLE: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
Jarvis Jones falls a bit due to health and size concerns, but he's still an explosive defensive playmaker who refuses to quit. He's scheme versatile and a dynamite pass rusher, which will be a huge benefit to new coach Rob Chudzinski as he tries to figure out how he wants to structure his new team.
7 - ARI: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Barkley had a disappointing year, but quarterbacks have risen every year since the rookie wage-scale was implemented. Taking a chance on a franchise quarterback simply isn't a big risk anymore, and Arizona can afford to draft a polished passer to help their offense catch up quickly to their defense. Barkley has some concerns, but he's arguably the surest quarterback left on the board.
8 - BUF: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
The Bills are hellbent on getting their franchise guy. There aren't any elite quarterbacks this year, so Tyler Wilson's poor senior campaign, marred by injury and a coaching change, can be minimized in the draft process. He's still very talented with an arm to play in cold, windy, Buffalo.
9 - NYJ: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
The Jets need a quarterback, but that is far from their only concern. They've needed a good edge rusher for the past couple of years and haven't found a permanent answer. Dion Jordan's upside is too great to pass up here.
10 - TEN: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
Tennessee needs a corner, and Milliner is arguably the best player on the board.
11 - SD: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Eric Fisher benefits from Jake Matthews and Taylor Lewan returning to school. The Chargers' line is a mess and needs a building block.
12 - MIA: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Miami needs to surround their young quarterback with weapons to ensure success. Getting a dynamic playmaker like Allen in will do wonders for Ryan Tannehill's development.
13 - TB: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
Tampa Bay's secondary is in terrible shape. They drafted Mark Barron last year to start the process of rebuilding their back end, but with the Aquib Talib trade, they now have two gaping holes on the corners. Banks can fill one of them.
14 - CAR: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
The Panthers' defense gave away some games this year, and that was largely due to an ineffective interior. Johnathan Hankins is scheme versatile, which is huge for Ron Rivera's eclectic defense.
15 - NO: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The Saints need to generate some sort of pass rush. Sheldon Richardson is a special interior penetrator in pass defense.
16 - STL: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Lane Johnson is another beneficiary of the return of Jake Matthews and Taylor Lewan. He could provide the Rams with an athletic bookend to Rodger Saffold.
17 - PIT: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
Manti Te'o will fall due to concerns about his movement ability. The National Championship Game didn't help his cause, but a fall of this kind could have been forseen before it. Te'o provides a young leader to an aging defense.
18 - DAL: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Dallas' interior often collapsed this year. Chance Warmack is a roadgrater that could prevent that from happening in the future.
19 - NYG: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
Ansah is going to be a fast riser because of his ridiculous athletic ability. The Giants love defensive ends with tons of upside, and they could very much use one to pair with Jason Pierre-Paul for the next decade.
20 - CHI: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Phil Emery has gotten flack for not going offensive line in the 2012 draft. He again goes that route this year, at least in this spot. Emery notes that Chicago's two starting tackles going into last year, J'Marcus Webb and Gabe Carimi, are still young and have potential to improve. It would take a markedly better prospect than the two of them to get Emery to go with tackle help here, and this is a weak class. Instead, Emery helps out the offense by grabbing this class' most reliable weapon.
21 - CIN: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
Cincinnati's defense has the potential to be absolutely dynamic. Alec Ogletree could add a presence in the middle to ensure that it does.
22 - STL: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The Rams still lack dynamic weapons for Sam Bradford. Justin Hunter is a huge target who can make plays.
23 - MIN: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Minnesota is facing uncertainty with Percy Harvin, and they lack a second playmaker on the outside anyway. Cordarrelle Patterson could provide the team with some explosive open field plays to keep opposing defenses on their toes.
24 - IND: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The Colts need line help, but Barkevious Mingo's potential is too great here. Indianapolis needs to start building on the defensive side of the ball, and Mingo can be an incredible pass rusher.
25 - SEA: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
Seattle showed incredible potential during the latter part of this year. They could still use another weapon for Russell Wilson to become even more dangerous.
26 - GB: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
Green Bay is lucky to have a top zone-blocking guard fall to them here. Jon Cooper would be a huge boost to their interior.
27 - HOU: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
The Texans lack linebacker depth, and Kevin Minter is the best linebacker available.
28 - DEN: David Amerson, CB, North Carolina State
The Broncos' season was debacled by atrocious secondary play. David Amerson has ball skills that make him a really special centerfielder. He could provide Denver with a big time play maker in their secondary.
29 - BAL: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas
Ed Reed isn't going to play forever, and this Ravens defense needs good, young players on their defense. With no clear replacement for Ray Lewis on the board, they look to solidify their backend.
30 - ATL: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
The Falcons are going to have to replace John Abraham some day. Sam Montgomery falls in this scenario due to work ethic and get-off concerns, but he's athletic and productive enough to warrant a first round pick.
31 - NE: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
The Patriots could be severing ties with Wes Welker soon. If they do, they'll need a threat in the slot. Tavon Austin would not only provide them with a replacement for Welker, but also the dynamic weapon that they've been lacking since trading Randy Moss.
32 - SF: Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist
The 49ers can afford to take a chance on a player with Margus Hunt's upside. Justin Smith is getting older and has been injured this year. The 49ers defense needs production from its frontline players, and Hunt can be a player who solidfies that front for several years with his physical gifts.
