12/1 Daniel Westra's Mock Draft 0.1
1 - KC: Mike Glennon, QB, North Carolina State
Call me crazy. I think that Mike Glennon is the top quarterback prospect in the draft, especially after Geno Smith's horrendous outing against Syracuse in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Mike Glennon will have a lot to prove tomorrow in his bowl game matchup. From what I have heard, it looks like Scott Pioli will be retained next season and that Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz may be named head coach of KC. If so, Ferentz will need a QB, and Glennon may be the top target.
2 - JAX: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
The Jaguars appear to be in a rebuild mode, and it appears that Gene Smith won't be returning next offseason. Since there is no quarterback prospect worthy of this selection, the new GM must start with a defensive player. They claimed Jason Babin off waivers, which will be a huge plus to their defense. They need to use this selection to complement him, and that starts with taking Jarvis Jones, the DE/OLB hybrid from Georgia, who is the best pass rusher in the draft.
3 - OAK: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
The Raiders have shown time and time again to be the dirtiest organization in football. Tommy Kelly was just ejected for fighting against the Bengals, and he needs to be cut. Thankfully, there is a great replacement available with this selection, Star Lotulelei. Lotulelei is a talented defensive tackle out of Utah, and is very NFL-ready. He would immediately provide a positive impact on the Raiders defense.
4 - PHI: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
The Eagles problems start with their offensive line, which have blocked productions in all aspects of their game. Andy Reid should be fired, and any new coach would not force Todd Herremans to move to tackle, and he should move back to his natural guard position. That means they must select a tackle with this pick, and the top tackle is Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M. The NFL-ready tackle would provide an instant upgrade to the Eagles offensive line, and this pick is a "must do" for the Eagles.
5 - DET: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
A lot of Detroit's defensive problems root with the outside linebackers, and DeAndre Levy and Justin Durant have not been effective. Durant is a free agent, and must not be retained. Damontre Moore is a top prospect in this draft, and he recently declared for the draft. Moore would be a beneficial upgrade over Durant, having played both DE and OLB in college. The top prospect from College Station would be a surefire upgrade over Durant, and should be the pick here.
6 - CLE: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
Scott Fujita won't be retained. He has done a poor job handling Bountygate and his injury proneness is a concern. D'Qwell Jackson should be moved to weakside linebacker to replace him, for that is his natural position. That means there is a hole at inside linebacker, and Manti Te'o would fill that hole. Te'o, a Heisman candidate this season, is one of the top inside linebackers anybody has ever seen come out of college, and has the potential to be great. He would be a smart pick for CLE.
7 - ARI: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
The former top-slot holder of my draft has fallen to pick #7, for he showed many errors in the Pinstripe Bowl, where West Virginia took a beatdown against a weak Syracuse defense. Irregardless, Smith is a freakish mobile athlete with developmental growth, and would be a solid upgrade over any of Arizona's three quarterbacks. Smith should be guaranteed the starting spot from day one, and selecting him would make Larry Fitzgerald's production bolster.
8 - BUF: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
I am really torn on this Bills pick. If this is the scenario, I project the BIlls will trade back for more picks in the latter part of the draft. I have Matt Barkley, the hollywood favorite from USC, going to the Bills here. Buddy Nix said he wants a quarterback, but is Barkley really 6th pick talent after this past season? I don't know, and Barkley will need to prove himself at the combine to show he's worth this pick.
9 - NYJ: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
Since the top three quarterbacks in this draft have been taken, I don't see the Jets stretching this early for Tyler Wilson. The Jets biggest need besides a stable quarterback, is a pass rusher. Garrett McIntyre and Bryan Thomas have been completely irreliable at LOLB, and need to be replaced. Werner would be able to play at both DE and OLB, and would be a great new addition to the Jets rush attack.
10 - TEN: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
I look at Tennessee's defensive depth chart, and I see one massive hole, Alterraun Verner, a starting cornerback. Verner has been smoked by many wide receivers this season, and they desperately need an upgrade across McCourty. Dee Milliner is the top defensive back this season, and should get similar looks as Morris Claiborne got last draft. Milliner is very talented, and Tennessee desperately needs him, making this a great fit.
11 - SD: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Lewan's draft stock has upgraded significantly this season, due to Lewan's outstanding play at offensive tackle. San Diego has had a mediocre season this year, mainly due to nothing being done because their offensive line is terrible. Selecting Lewan would be an immediate upgrade over Michael Harris, who has been absolutely miserable this season. Lewan would be a good fit for the Chargers, and would help provide security to Phillip Rivers and Ryan Matthews
12 - MIA: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
It appears that Jake Long will not return to Miami. They should draft a replacement, this year. I have seen Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay ranting about how Eric Fisher is very ready to step up to the next level, and he appears to be the top tackle available. Fisher, a raw prospect from a small school, would need seasoning. However, I could see 6'8" tackle coming out as one of the top player of this draft class in five years from now.
13 - TB: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Buccaneers decided that they didn't like Morris Claiborne at 5 last year, and paid the price for not taking him. Matter of fact, they traded starter Aqib Talib to New England, so they are desperate for a cornerback. Banks is a good fit for Tampa. He plays talented wide receivers in the SEC, and has succeeded in covering wideouts. Banks would be an immediate upgrade over the current option, and Tampa needs him badly.
14 - CAR: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
The Panthers decided not to take a defensive tackle last draft, feeling they could put off the need. I highly doubt they feel the same, for backup halfbacks have massacred their defense. They need to start with a defensive tackle, for Dwan Edwards and Sione Fua have been miserable up front. They need to transfer to a 3-4, for they have two great inside linebackers, and they should draft Hankins to play nose tackle, his natural position that he played at Ohio State.
15 - NO: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The Saints must draft a defensive tackle here to replace Sedrick Ellis, a bust defensive tackle who is a free agent this offseason. Sheldon Richardson has been shooting up draft boards. He had a phenomenal season at Missouri this year, and would be greatly benefitted by great combine posts. He would be a good addition to the Saints defensive line.
16 - STL: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson have seen lower production because their offensive line is unsustainable. Shelley Smith and Robert Turner have been terrible over at left guard, and they need a replacement. Chance Warmack, an offensive guard from Alabama, is the most talented offensive guard to enter the NFL draft in years. He is prepared to step in immediately, and any team would be lucky to get an instant upgrade. The Rams should take Warmack here, and he would be a great fit into their line.
17 - PIT: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
James Harrison will likely not be back next year. He is due $6.6 million, and I don't expect the Steelers to pay him that, for it would be easier to cut the older linebacker. They will seek a rush linebacker if they replace him, and Mingo, a 3-4 OLB, would be a great replacement. It is a necessity for Pittsburgh to draft an OLB, likely Bingo here, a hybrid DE/OLB who is an NFL-ready LSU product and would be an immediate replacement for Harrison.
18 - DAL: Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
The Cowboys did not select J.J. Watt in 2009, and paid the penalty of poor pass rushing from the defensive line for the past two years, although drafting Tyron Smith may have been worth it. Regardless, the Cowboys need a new pass rusher. Since there is no defensive end prospect worthy of this slot, they should move Jay Ratliff back to defensive end, his natural replacement. Jonathan Jenkins would be a good force inside for the Cowboys defense, and would fix part of the Cowboys' defense.
19 - NYG: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
The Giants linebacking corps have been awful this season. Chase Blackburn has been terrible inside this year, and they were demolished by Ray Rice and Isaac Redman. The Giants need a new inside linebacker, and they should draft Alec Ogletree. Ogletree had a great season alongside Jarvis Jones and Jonathan Jenkins this season, and his stock has improved because of it. Ogletree would be an immediate upgrade over Chase Blackburn.
20 - CHI: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
Anybody who watches Bears football sees that their offensive line is very poor. Their offensive line has been miserable this season, and could use an upgrade. Jonathan Cooper, an Outland award finalist, has shown that he is NFL-ready this season with great blocking all season long. Cooper would be an immediate upgrade, and the Bears shouldn't fear taking him.
21 - STL: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
It appears more and more likely that Terrance Williams will be the first receiver taken in this draft. The stud from Baylor posted great numbers with and without RG3, and appears to be ready for the NFL. Sam Bradford has been deprived of a talented wide receiver, which in turn (with terrible pass protection) has stunted his NFL development. St. Louis's first action must be to draft a wide receiver, and Terrance Williams is the man for the job.
22 - MIN: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Christian Ponder has only one reliable target in Percy Harvin, and they should find a new receiver to develop Ponder. Justin Hunter had a terrific season at Tennessee, and has proven to be one of the top wide receivers in this draft. Hunter, a physical wide receiver, would be a great match across the Percy Harvin.
23 - CIN: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas
Like Mark Barron, Kenny Vaccaro has shown that he has the talent to be a mid-first round selection in this draft. Taylor Mays was so terrible this year that Nate Clements was forced to move from Slot CB to SS, and must move back to cornerback next season. Kenny Vaccaro has shown the ability to start immediately in the NFL, and would be a perfect fit for the Bengals.
24 - IND: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
The Colts have some work to do on their defense. Their pass rush may have held up this year, but it won't next year. Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney are getting old, and they need to look for replacements either this draft or next. Montgomery, a DE/OLB hybrid from LSU had a modest season, but appears to be uncannily athletic. With training, Montgomery could eventually come in to replace Freeney or Mathis.
25 - SEA: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
The Seahawks can't deprive Russell Wilson from a top wide receiver. He needs a target, and Cordarelle Patterson fits the bill. This past season, Patterson stepped in to replace the suspended Da'Rick Rogers, and had a great season. Tennessee's passing attack was dangerous, and Cordarelle Patterson's stock jumped because of it. Patterson would be a great target for Wilson, and could start from day one.
26 - BAL: Khaseem Greene, OLB, Rutgers
Time and time again the Ravens have shown they need a future successor to Ray Lewis. Khaseem Greene's stock has risen this year, and posted great numbers this year while leading Rutgers' defense. I expect Greene to be drafted in one of the first two rounds, and would be a great eventual replacement to Ray Lewis at inside linebacker.
27 - GB: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
The Packers drafted Jerel Worthy to play defensive tackle last draft, but were forced to move him over to the end position because C.J. Wilson has failed this year. Dion Jordan is a quick, athletic stud out of Oregon, who had a great season. Jordan would be a solid fit over at defensive end for the Packers.
28 - SF: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The 49ers have multiple free agents this year, and it appears somewhat unlikely they will re-sign Isaac Sopoaga, their starting nose tackle. In the past two years, Kawann Short has shown ample production, and could be greatly benefitted by coming to an organization of the Niners' caliber. With development, I could see Short being a starter in two years or so.
29 - HOU: Matt Elam, SS, Florida
The Texans need to find a safety to replace the inconsistent Grover Quin, who is also a free agent. Elam, a safety out of Florida, has shown that he is NFL ready with great performance all season long that, which in return bolstered his draft stock. Elam would be a great, immediate fit into the Texans rock-solid defense.
30 - NE: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Wes Welker will be gone. The Patriots have not valued him highly enough, and he will leave for a team that does. So, that leaves a hole opposite Brandon Lloyd. Keenan Allen's stock has fallen this year, but he is still one of the top wide receiving targets in this years' draft. The speedster from California would provide a dynamic wide receiver across Lloyd, and would be a fine fit into the Patriots' offensive system.
31 - DEN: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
The Broncos drafted Derek Wolfe last year to become a defensive tackle. However, he has proven to be a great defensive end, and won himself the starting job. That still leaves a hole at defensive tackle. Not to mention that Williams is a top-15 prospect, he would be a great fit. Williams posted great numbers this season, and should be a first round selection. Williams would be an immediate upgrade over Kevin Vickerson at defensive tackle.
32 - ATL: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
I expect Tony Gonzalez to retire this offseason. Tyler Eifert, the 6'8" tight end out of Notre Dame, would be a great replacement. Eifert is NFL ready, and would be a great fit either as a TE-H or TE-Y into the Falcons pass-balanced offense.
