1/23 rjmichels0's Mock Draft
1 - KC: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
Very tough decision here for the Chiefs because they're reaching for Geno Smith here. With better players on the board that can help out this Chiefs team its a very hard choice. However, with this organization having very little success at quarterback the past few years they need to at least take a shot at a potential franchise quarterback. Smith is a little raw but has great pocket awareness and throws a solid ball. I still dont think he is number one potential though.
2 - JAX: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
The Jaguars cant even have a question with this pick. Jarvis Jones is the best player in this draft and a Von Miller clone almost. Jones would instantly put a playmaker on the defensive side for the Jaguars. At this point the Jags have a lot of holes and they cant go wrong taking the best player in the draft in Jones.
3 - OAK: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
It is high for a middle linebacker to come off the board but Te'o is a talent and the leader the Raiders can use. The Raiders new ownership wants to lead this team in a new direction and getting Te'o to lead that defense would be a great first step. Te'o is probably the best middle linebacker to come out in a long time and has had his game compared to Ray Lewis's style of play.
4 - CLE: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
The Browns could go two ways here they could go with Damontre Moore or guard Chance Warmack. I think its a little early to take a guard so I think they will take the pass rushing specialist in Moore. Moore leads the country in tackles for lose and also is closing in on a double digit sack season. Moore's pass rushing would only help a very young and promising defense out even more.
5 - PHI: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
The Eagles hope to get left tackle Jason Peters back healthy next year but they still need a lot of help up front. By drafting Luke Joekel it gives the Eagles a back up plan for Peters or a stud right tackle. The high powered Eagles offense can never get anything going but adding Joeckel and getting Peters back would give them a new look front line. With Peters and Joeckel the might have the best tackle duo in the league.
6 - CAR: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
This pick is interesting because the Panthers like thier defensive tackle group but at the same time they dont have anyone like Star Lotulelei. Lotulelei is a monster when it comes to stopping the run which is exactly what the Panthers defense needs. Lotulelei has shown he doesnt have much of a pass rush but think after a year or two in the NFL he can develop. Either way he should demand double teams instantly in the NFL.
7 - BUF: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
So far it has been a defensive draft and the norm will continue with the Bills. The Bills need to sure up that defense and adding a playmaker like Alex Ogletree would help a lot. Ogletree can stuff the run but at the same time can cover a lot of ground in the passing game. Ogletree isnt the prettiest pick in the draft but he would give the Bills a solid middle linebacker for years.
8 - SD: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
With starting corners Antonio Cason and Quentin Jammer heading into free agency I think the Chargers will not hesitate to take Dee Milliner. I expect them to try and resign at least Cason or Jammer but not both so Milliner would be looked at as the future corner for the Chargers. Milliner has so much talent that he sometimes gets a head of himself. At the same time though once he learns how to control his body and make plays he will be a lock down corner for a long time.
9 - NYJ: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
The trend continues with now 7 of the first 9 players taken be defensive players. The Jets need a pass rusher and drafting Barkevious Mingo will finally be the answer. Mingo is a great pass rusher and brings a set of skills coach Rex Ryan hasnt had in New York. The guy is a gifted athlete but at the same time he disappears for stretches but with Ryan coaching him we think he can live up to the potential.
10 - TEN: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
It feels like the Titans draft a defensive end early every year but Bjoern Werner is worth the addition. With a pass happy division the Titans need as many pass rushers as possible. Werner is a very good pass rusher but also does a lot of other things to affect the game. Werner will bring his hard hat every day and eveyone on that Titan defense will love playing with him.
11 - ARI: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Its going to be Taylor Lewan or Matt Barkley and right now I'm going Lewan. The Cards offensive line is awful maybe the worst ever. I truly think Kevin Kolb is a decent quarterback and with any time can at least produce. That is why I think the Cards will look to upgrade that front five before looking to at a new quarterback to get sacked. Lewan is a true athlete at the corner and should be an instant starter on the Cards line.
12 - DET: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
This is an interesting pick because the top corner is gone and the top two offensive tackles are taken. I think if this draft is the case I see the Lions upgrading the pass rush. Sam Montgomery is falling on draft boards but the kid can still play. Montgomery wouldnt have to be the starter right away either with Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch there but he will be looked at as Vanden Bosch's replacement. Montgomery has a great motor and should fit in well with the Lions.
13 - STL: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
The Rams get their guy at receiver though Cordarrelle Patterson has only had one big year at Tennesse the kid is talented. The kid has size and speed as well as big time play making ability which is what Sam Bradford has never had in St. Louis. Patterson is almost a no brainer right here for the Rams who are looking for any talent at wide out.
14 - MIA: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
Dolphins fans will be bumed they didnt get Patterson but they will quickly forget about that with drafting Chance Warmack. Warmack is a top five talent in this draft and falls to the Dolphins because teams wont take guards to early. Warmack is an animal and would be an upgrade over both Dolphin starters. Warmack is a bull and backs down to no challenge and will be loved by any team he goes to.
15 - STL: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
Coach Jeff Fisher gets his playmaking wide out and his left tackle of the future. Eric Fisher is under the radar for some people but the kid can flat out block. Some say he hasnt played good competition i the MAC conference but he has looked great when Central Michigan goes againt a contender. Fisher is the rel deal and might be the steal of the draft so far.
16 - NO: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
Another steal in this draft with the Saints getting a top ten talent in this draft. Hankins is a one trick pony but is very good at that one thing which is run stuffing. Hankins plays a bit high but with good coaching will play lower. The Saints defense is rebuilding and starting with Hankins in the middle is a hell of a start.
17 - DAL: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
The Cowboys might look a lot of different places here but I think taking Sheldon Richardson is the best choice. Richardson is a perfect fit for the 3-4 defense the Cowboys run. He would be an upgrade over Jason Hatcher and Marcus Spears and give them a pass rushing threat out of the defensive tackle position.
18 - CIN: Kenny Vaccaro, SS, Texas
The Bengals need a playmaking safety to make this defense take the next step. Kenny Vaccaro is exactly that and has big time playmaking abilty from the safety position. Vaccaro doesnt tackle well but with Taylor Mays at strong safety he has a lot of help in that department.
19 - TB: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
The Bucs are starting to rebuild and adding a pass rusher like Dion Jordan will only help. Jordan is a big time pass rushing specialist and has great speed off the corner. The Bucs could look at a lot of different players at this position but Jordan has the most upside much like Bruce Irvin last year.
20 - MIN: Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
The Vikings will be looking to rebuild that run defense and taking John Jenkins will help. Jenkins isnt a wow prospect but the kid can play. He stops the run very well and opens room for the linebackers to make plays. Jenkins can also give a little in pass pressure but can also be a fine replacement for aging Kevin Williams.
21 - PIT: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Steelers defense is aging and the secondary is hurting the most. Starting corner Ike Taylor has a few more years as a stud but the other side is practically up for grabs. Getting a play maker like johnthan Banks would be a big addition for this defense. Banks has great instincts and also isnt afraid to come up and tackle which is big in Pittsburgh.
22 - SEA: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
The defense is one of the best in the league and the offense has potential. Adding a stud guard like Jonathan Cooper would be a major upgrade for this offense. Cooper has had a great career in Chapel Hill and rarely made a mistake. Cooper is great pass blocker but is also a very good run blocker which is what the Seahawks need.
23 - IND: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
The Colts have been an amazing story this year and have a shot at the playoffs. At the same time this team has weaknesses and the front three in this 3-4 defense is questionable. Adding a player like Floyd would give them a good defensive tackle who can make a lot of plays. Floyd was a big recruit coming out of high school and this year he is finally starting to live up to the hype.
24 - NYG: Dallas Thomas, OT, Tennessee
The Giants know how to run a team and they will take care of their weaknesses right away. Adding depth to the front five offensively is the first goal for them. Dallas Thomas might be a bit of a stretch here but he will give them a guy that can contend to start and at worst some depth to an aging tackle core.
25 - GB: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The Packers will probably let go of Jermichael Finley and will quickly look for a replacement. They dont need to look any further then Tyler Eifert. Eifert would be a great pick up for the pass happy Packers. He brings a big play guy at tight end who can stretch the field like non other. Eifert needs to work on his run blocking but so do most receiving threats coming out of college.
26 - DEN: Cornellius Carradine, DE, Florida State
The Broncos have a very solid team and are looking to add depth at this point. Adding some more pass rushers would be the first objective for the Broncos. Cornellius or Tank Carradine has slipped a bit in scouts boards but the kid can make plays. Carradine doesnt excel at one thing but he does a lot of things well and with some coaching could be a steal for the Broncos.
27 - CHI: Rick Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
Maybe the surprise of the first round but the Bears are desperate to get offensive line help. Rick Wagner is a solid lineman nothing special and can do a lot. Wagner is a bruiser but can also pass block pretty well too. Wagner might be a stretch but the Bears need bodies up front and taking anyone with potential is worth it for them.
28 - NE: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Yes, another receiver for the Pats. The Pats have been known for taking the best player available which is why Allen is going here. The Pats are realizing that Wes Welker is aging and Brandon Lloyd isnt as good as they thought. Allen can be a huge playmaker for the Pats and give them a legit number one threat to go with Welker on the inside.
29 - SF: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
With an already stud defense adding a future nose guard can never hurt. Issac Sopoaga isnt great and Kawann Short could be an upgrade and allow those linebackers to run even more free. Some say Short doesnt have the motor or meanness but I'm think coach Jim Harbaugh can change that pretty fast.
30 - BAL: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The rich get richer here just like the Pats the Ravens will most likely take the best player available. Justin Hunter is very good and could be a legit number one for the Ravens to go with Torrey Smith. Hunter is a play maker plan and simple and would give the Ravens another threat for their offense.
31 - HOU: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Surprise! The Texans are in no rush to get rid of Matt Schaub at the same time he is getting up there in age. I think Matt Schuab after this year has two good years left and then they can look at the future with Matt Barkley. The Texans are going to be contenders for years so this might be their best chance at getting a future frachise quarterback.
