2013 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State

Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner is a 4-3 DE with a frame that could eventually transition to a 3-4 DE with added bulk later in his career. A hard-working prospect, Werner may not be as athletically gifted as some of the defensive line prospects, but he makes up for it in a well-rounded game where he can defend the run and pressure the quarterback.

Werner was born and raised in Germany and played only two years of high school football. He plays with a reliable motor and can play at a high level deep into games. A natural bender who can stay low and move the pile at the point of attack. Lateral quickness is good and he can break down the ball carrier to wrap up the tackle.

Coming off the edge as a pass rusher, Werner uses his hands well in a phone booth. Can extend blockers away from his body and drive them back into the pocket. Not a natural in coverage, but has the length to cover athletic tight ends and adequate speed to cover the flats.

Werner's stock likely did not improve after the combine. He did not look like a natural 3-4 OLB and this may limit his value as a down lineman only. He projects as a mid-first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
