2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Tyler Nielsen, OLB, Iowa

One of the key leaders to the Iowa Hawkeyes defense had to this outside linebacker prospect out of Iowa. Nielsen has the ideal height and adequate bulk to be a career pro in the NFL. In spite of some mediocre athleticism, Nielsen makes his mark through having a good feel for the game. He may be a step slow physically yet he can quickly identify and tackle ball carriers and recognize routes in zone coverage.

As a pass rusher, Nielsen needs work. He doesn't get off of blocks efficiently and doesn't use his hands well to disengage blockers. Will need to learn to play more violently by swatting away the arms of his opponents. When attacking the ball, he takes poor angles. He plays to the whistle every play although he is not fast enough to cover sideline to sideline.

Nielsen is an average tackler. He will routinely get beat by more athletic playmakers, especially in open space. In order to take the next step in his progression, Nielsen must learn to play tougher and more aggressively. He does some things well from a mental standpoint but he simply lacks the physical tools most are looking for in a first year player.
