Baron Batch, RB, Texas Tech

Baron Batch started his true freshman campaign as Texas Tech's backup running back. He was doing well early in the year and even scored his first career rushing touchdown, but only played in four games before suffering a season ending injury. It took Batch the entire 2007 campaign to completely heal from his Achilles injury and he redshirted that season. In 2008 Batch battled it out with Shannon Woods for carries. It was Woods who got more opportunities, but Batch got more yards and averaged an impressive 6.7 yards per carry and reached the end zone seven times on the ground. And since this was the old Texas Tech, Batch was equally effective in the passing game and added one more score on 45 receptions.

The 2009 season was Batch's year to take over the running back job. He did just that. This was still a team that passed a lot and Batch did catch 57 passes for 395 yards, but it was his ability to punch the ball into the end zone or pick up the tough yards on the ground that made his season so successful. On the year Batch rushed for 884 yards on 168 carries and reached the end zone 14 times.

Batch could be a very solid third down back in the NFL, but the 2010 season has been very disappointing for him. Under a new coaching staff, it was expected that the Red Raiders would spend more time on the ground. They have, but Batch has had to split carries and has seen his yards per carry and touchdown numbers dip significantly. Batch will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to work his way up into the middle rounds, but should get drafted at some point as a solid pass blocker and short yardage back.
