2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Ryan Winterswyk, DE, Boise State

In 2006 Ryan Winterswyk walked on to Boise State. Five years later he is a legitimate NFL prospect. However, Winterswyk's road to stardom happened much quicker than anyone thought. As a redshirt freshman in 2007, the 6-4 defensive end totaled 43 tackles, 9.0 tackles-for-loss, 5.5 sacks and four pass breakups. Winterswyk received some national accolades for his efforts, but he made an even bigger impact as a sophomore. During that season he tallied 11.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.5 sacks. Winterswyk again showed his versatility by breaking up six passes. As a result he garnered first-team All-WAC accolades.

The first-team All-Conference honors would continue for the next two seasons. In 2009 he totaled 41 tackles, 17.0 tackles-for-loss and nine sacks. During his senior season Winterswyk's numbers took a hit due to double teams, but he still managed to tally 44 tackles, 9.0 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks. More importantly for Boise State, while the opposition was worrying about Winterswyk, players like Winston Venable, Tyrone Crawford and Shea McClellin had superb seasons getting to the quarterback.

Winterswyk lacks the speed to be a dominating force in the NFL. He has plenty of size, but he needs to add some strength and find a way to increase his speed or develop more effective pass rushing moves that will work at the next level. He will not be able to do that prior to the draft, so he is a late round project at best.
