2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Nate Collins, DT, Virginia

Nate Collins has quietly been a clog in the middle of the Virginia defense for the last four years. As a freshman he was a key reserve and played over 200 snaps. Collins only tallied 17 tackles, but that did include four tackles-for-loss and one sack. It was not until his junior season when Collins stepped into a starting role and even then it was just part-time. However, Collins was steadily moving up his tackle totals and finished the 2008 campaign with 36 tackles. It was during his senior campaign when Collins became much more than just a roleplayer on this team. The Cavaliers' defense left something to be desired, but Collins proved to be a very effective clog in the middle of the line. Collins ended up ranking second on the team with 77 tackles and leading the team with 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. Collins even recorded his first career interception. At 6-2 and 290 pounds, he does not have the ideal size for a defensive tackle in the NFL. That lack of size will drop Collins down to the fifth or sixth round, but it is his quickness and versatility that make him an intriguing option. Collins was not invited to the NFL Combine and he will need to show his stuff at Virginia's pro day to improve his stock any further than that.
