Mike Brandtner, P, Iowa State

Mike Brandtner certainly has gotten a lot of punting experience during his time at Iowa State. As a four year starter, Brandtner has punted the ball a total of 237 times; that is a lot, especially for a team that is not playing 14 games a year. The 6-0, 200 pound Bettendorf, Iowa native has generally improved as his career has progressed. As a redshirt freshman in 2006, he averaged 41.2 yards per punt and boomed a 73-yarder at Oklahoma. His average dropped in 2007 to below 40 yards per attempt, but he was getting better at getting the ball inside the 20 yard line. As an upperclassman Brandtner got a little more consistent. In 2008, 19 of his 51 punts were downed inside the 20 and his average per kick went up to 41.6 yards. His senior season was nearly as productive and Brandtner dropped 21 punts inside the 20. Brandtner does not have the strongest leg around, but he is getting pretty good at placing punts inside the 20. During his senior year when he had 21 punts inside the 20, he only had five touchbacks. That is pretty impressive, but his lack of consistent leg strength will keep him below some of the top punters on most NFL draft boards.
