Rusty Smith, QB, Florida Atlantic

Smith, a product of the talent-rich Jacksonville area, has started for the Owls since late in his freshman year of 2006. In 2007 (his first as a full time starter), Smith posted an impressive 32-9 TD/INT ratio on the strength of 3,688 passing yards. For his exploits, he was voted the Sun Belt Player of the Year. He followed up his breakout performances with a solid campaign in 2008. Once again, he topped the 3,000 yard mark (3,224), but his interception total went up (14) while the scores took a dip (24). Smith lacks elite arm strength, but is good enough to make all the NFL throws. He does show better zip on the balls when throwing to his right, and is at his best when working the short-to-intermediate routes. He has improved his field vision; smooth and athletic with above average quickness and speed (4.88). Smith has great pocket presence, and is a natural leader who commands respect. He makes things happen and fears nothing on the field. He also has ideal height and adequate bulk. However, he has marginal passing skills: Accuracy -- a problem for him even in the intermediate areas -- suffers badly on passes beyond 15 to 20 yards. Smith has an unorthodox delivery. Although he has improved his readings, he still misses too many open receivers. What happens is that he locks in too often on a primary target and ends up not making big plays. There are questions regarding his understanding of complexes offenses. Smith has good physical tools, but his inconsistencies and often erratic passing make him a borderline prospect. Some teams won't look at him. He projects as a late rounder -- bottom part of the sixth or early seventh round (if he is drafted at all).
