2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Paul Kruger, DE, Utah

A redshirt sophomore, Kruger declared for the NFL Draft early this year. He began his college career in 2004 (was redshirted), but did not play in 2005 and 2006 due to his Mormon Church's commitment. He then played in all of Utah's 13 games in 2008, registering 61 tackles, 16.5 for loss. He also had 7.5 sacks and added seven passes broken up. Kruger is very aggressive and strong at the point of attack. Having great speed (4.64) and the frame to add more bulk, he is an above average tackler. He bends his knees to play with leverage, holding his ground. However, he tends to lose focus on running plays and will over pursue. Kruger is a very active outside pass rusher who can beat blockers inside or outside with a variety of quick moves. Still, he does not diagnose plays well and he lacks experience. Kruger, only a sophomore, has everything scouts look for in a defensive end: He is a good athlete who has great speed and lateral movements. However, his lack of experience is a major drawback and there are also questions about his perceived lack of quickness at the outset. Consistently, Kruger is one of the last defenders moving at the snap. He will probably need a year or two of seasoning to bring out his best; but he is a second rounder for sure.
