2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Phillip Hunt, DE, Houston

Hunt (a product of Forth Worth, Texas) enrolled at Houston in 2004. He sat down the 2005 season as a redshirt freshman. Hunt saw action in twelve games during Houston's 2006 campaign. He finished the season with 58 tackles, 5 for loss, and two sacks. His play earned a spot on Conference USA Third Team squad. He started in all of the team's fourteen games in 2007, while recording 55 tackles, 18 for losses, and 10.5 sacks. After the season, Hunt was voted by the Coaches and the media to the C-USA First Team. Hunt is a powerful (although slightly built) defensive end who will most likely be moved to outside linebacker. He is a very fluid athlete who moves well in and out the line of scrimmage. He has smooth, lateral movement and a good backpedaling motion. He is short and somewhat slightly built and he needs to add upper body strength. Hunt has good speed (4.65), but does not explode off the ball. He is not strong at the point of contact and he needs to work on his technique. At this time in his development, Hunt is not strong enough to be a full time DE in the NFL. He needs to work hard in the weight room. A sure draftee, Hunt could go as high as the fourth round, but the fifth or even the sixth round seems a more realistic area at this point.
