2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Chase Clement, QB, Rice

Clement was redshirted in 2004, then went on to start one of the eleven games he played for the Owls in 2005 -- completing 53 out of 126 attempts for 582 yards with a 5 to 6 TD-INT ratio. In 2006, Clement started eight of eleven games, recording 153 completions out of 265 attempts for 1,707 yards with 21 TD and 5 INT. In 2007, Clement had a breakout campaign, throwing for 3,337 yards on 300 out of 508 attempted passes with a 29-16 TD-INT ratio. He also led Rice with 535 rushing yards and eight rushing TD. He has good (not great) arm strength, making him very accurate in the short-to-intermediate area; his accuracy diminishes as he throws deeper because of his compact throwing motion. Clement is an athletic player who can make things happen with his feet. He goes through his progressions with good ball handle. However, his mechanics are in need of tuning. He is also short, so he may have trouble seeing the entire field. He also tends to checkout of a play early. Clement is a very good college quarterback who has only marginal tools, but the NFL is filled with such players (most of them as backups). As of the beginning of the season, the Rice QB was looked at primary as a Free Agent, but with a good season and a great workout, he could sneak up to the later stages of Day Two.
