2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State
Bomar was a highly touted QB coming out of high school. Originally he signed on to play for Bob Stoops at Oklahoma, but redshirted in 2004. He then became the Sooners' starting QB the second week of the 2005 campaign, completing 167 of 308 (54.2%) passes for 2,018 yards with 10 TD and 10 INT. He had several off field issues while at OU and then transferred to Sam Houston State the following year. Bomar became the team starter in 2007, making 172 completions out of 291 attempts (59.1) for 2,209 yards and 10 TD with 6 INT before suffering a thorn left ACL which force him to miss the last two games of the season. A natural leader, Bomar possesses a big, powerful arm which he uses to fit balls into tight windows. Bomar has a smooth throwing motion and is very athletic and runs well (4.78). Moving well inside the pocket, he throws a catchable ball but is not the most accurate passer out there. His mechanics are rudimentary and he tends to lock up on his primary option. Bomar needs to polish his progression reading skills. His TD/INT ratio is a concern, especially playing at a lower level. Basically, he needs more experience. Some scouts rate Bomar more highly than others. Although he does posses good skill sets, his off the field issues coupled with his lack of accuracy will drop him on Draft Boards. Nevertheless, he is an intriguing second day prospect -- One that could even make an opening day NFL roster.
