2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Davon Bess, WR, Hawaii
Bess became Colt Brennen's top receiver in the last two seasons. He posted mind-boggling numbers playing in June Jones' pass happy offensive system. In 2006, Bess had 96 receptions for 1,220 yards. He also scored 15 touchdowns. He topped that incredible season in 2007 with an amazing 108 catch campaign, accounting for 1,266 yards while scoring 12 TDs. Bess is more quick (4.57-40) rather than fast. He runs good routes and knows how to setup defenders. He has smooth body control, with soft and reliable hands. Bess will come back to the quarterback when the play breaks down and he runs very well after the catch. However, he rs terrible undersized, causing him to struggle against top notch competition. He is not a reliable blocker at any level. Because he does not posses a second gear, he will not create separation at the next level. He tends to lose concentration, but is he just a product of the system? Bess benefited tremendously having Brennen throwing him the ball. Although he is an underclassman who lacks experience, Bess did make the correct decision in leaving early. His numbers would have probably dropped if he stayed it at Hawaii. Nevertheless, on skill set alone, Bess should not be drafted. This does not mean that he could not make an NFL roster. The league is full of possession-type receivers, but the lack of size will really hurt him. A team will take a flier on him late in the second day. With enough experience and more dedication, Bess could be a regular on an NFL roster.
