2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Pat Sims, DT, Auburn

After having put some personal issues behind him (including leaving the Tigers' program at one point in his career), Sims came into the 2007 campaign expecting to make a big impact. While he didn't have an overwhelming year statistically, he showed the skills that have NFL scouts believing he can be a force in the pros. Overall, Sims totaled 37 tackles -- 29 solo -- with 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles last season. He was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference by The Associated Press. Sims' biggest asset is his versatility. He should fit in well with either a 3-4 or a 4-3 scheme. Against the run he has the strength to stand up blockers and fill the running lanes. He has exceptional leverage, which allows him a push that disrupts running games. He isn't as skilled rushing the quarterback, but it's certainly not a glaring weakness. His quickness helps him partially overcome the need to improve his footwork and he can collapse the pocket by taking advantage of a good burst. Scouts also like his size and motor. Sims will need to improve his footwork. He also needs to improve at getting to the ball carrier and not being content to open opportunities for his linebackers. That should be a smooth transition with him adept at getting into running lanes to take on blockers. He isn't fast -- 4.98 seconds in 40-yard dash -- but he has good quickness. He has all the physical tools scouts look for. With a solid combine showing, he'll likely be taken in the second round.
