2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Tony Hills, OT, Texas

Hills went to Texas as one of the top tight end prospects in the country, but added more than 40 pounds and has developed into one of the nation's top offensive linemen. He didn't become a starter until his junior year in 2006, when he started all 13 games at left tackle. He's one of the big bodies responsible for opening holes up for future high-draft pick Jamaal Charles, current Broncos' back Selvin Young, and 2005 top-five pick Cedric Benson. This season, Hills had started all 11 of Texas' games before suffering breaking his leg in a victory over Texas Tech. Even though his season ended early, he earned All-Big 12 first-team accolades. The broken leg he suffered is the second time Hills has suffered a serious injury, after a severe ligament injury in his senior year of high school, which caused him to delay the start of his college career by a year. The past and present injury and the fact that this latest injury has happened at this juncture, could cause Hills to drop significantly in the draft. Pro Football Weekly said of Hills, 'Texas OLT Tony Hills is billed to be a great athlete within the program, but he does not play with any explosion or have great mobility for the left side, and as a right tackle, he will always have a leverage and power deficiency. He has overcome a drop foot condition suffered as a senior in high school, but team medical staffs will have to evaluate the injury closely, as do scouts watching him, and it could have a considerable effect on his draft value. The season-ending broken left fibula he suffered Nov. 10 also will not help his cause.' He's widely rated as one of the top offensive linemen on the board, so there's no issue about how highly his talent is thought of. The only question is if he'll be able to overcome his injuries to succeed in the NFL and whether those injury issues will make the difference in him going in the first couple of rounds or waiting until the second day to hear his name called.
