Golf Rankings for The Open Championship
Tiger Woods [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #1
Woods is a three-time winner of the Open Championship, most recently going back to back in 2005 and 2006. Last year’s T3 marked Tiger’s best performance in the event since those victories. The last time Muirfield played host was 2002 where Tiger was inside the top 10 after two rounds, but struggled in wet weather on Saturday. Tiger recently said his elbow feels good. Woods is looking for his fifth win of the season in just eight stroke play events.
Phil Mickelson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #5
Over his last six worldwide starts Mickelson has recorded four podium finishes, including a victory in last week’s Scottish Open. However, Lefty missed the cut in those other two events. Phil has never won the British, but finished a career-best T2 in 2011 only to miss last year’s cut. Mickelson placed T66 at Muirfield back in 2002.
Justin Rose [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #8
Rose enters the Open Championship with three consecutive finishes inside the top 15. He now owns eight top-25 finishes in nine stroke play starts. Rose finished T22 in the 2002 Open Championship at Muirfield. On Tour he ranks first in total driving and second in both scoring average and All-Around Ranking.
Ernie Els [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #34
Els is the defending champion of the Open Championship and also captured the 2002 event at Muirfield. He recently won the BMW International Open, but is coming off a missed cut in the Scottish Open. Els’ most recent Tour start was a T4 in the U.S. Open.
Adam Scott [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #2
Scott missed the cut at Muirfield back in 2002, but hasn’t missed a cut this season highlighted by a victory in the Masters. Last year’s Open Championship saw Scott finish as the lone runner-up after a disappointing final round of play. Scott made two starts last month finishing T45 in the U.S. Open and 57 at Congressional for his worst results of the season.
Rory McIlroy [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #9
Over his last four worldwide starts McIlroy has finished outside of the top 40, while missing two cuts most recently at the Irish Open two weeks ago. McIlroy has made five starts in the Open Championship since 2007, finishing a career-worst T60 last year.
Luke Donald [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #27
Donald has played the Open Championship each of the last four years with a pair of top-fives, including last year. He finished T8 in the U.S. Open, but more recently placed T42 at the French Open. Donald has struggled when playing international events, but hasn’t missed a cut while playing on Tour.
Lee Westwood [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #37
Westwood finished T3 in the 2009 Open Championship and was the solo runner-up the following year. Westwood played Muirfield in 2002, but missed the cut. Last year he finished T45. After finishing T15 in the U.S. Open, Westwood dropped to solo 74th at Cromwell.
Graeme McDowell [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #14
Over his last seven events McDowell has won the French Open, Volvo World Match Play Championship and Harbour Town, but also missed four other cuts. McDowell finished a career-best T5 in last year’s British Open.
Jason Day [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #4
Day hasn’t missed a cut this season and has shined in majors by finishing solo third in the Masters and T2 in the U.S. Open. He ranks 13th in scoring average and 15th in All-Around Ranking. Day finished T30 in 2011 British, but skipped the event last year for the birth of his child.
Brandt Snedeker [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #19
Snedeker is back on track after resolving his rib issues. In his last two starts he’s finished T17 in the U.S. Open and T8 at Congressional. Snedeker had missed three cuts in the British prior to last year’s T3.
Sergio Garcia [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #6
Garcia has played in 13 worldwide stroke play events this year with 11 finishes inside the top 20. He finished T8 at Muirfield in 2002 and is coming off a T7 at the BMW International Open. Among Tour pros, Garcia is fourth in both scoring average and All-Around Ranking.
