Buccaneers OC Jeff Tedford favors a running-back committee

Before being named the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator a couple of weeks ago -- his first NFL coaching job -- Jeff Tedford spent 11 years as the head coach at the University of California. During his time, his offenses were most effective when he had more than one running back getting significant work. Marshawn Lynch, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen, they were all involved in a committee at Cal. And it sounds like the same will happen in Tampa Bay.
"We really had a good one-two punch in the backfield [at California], and I think that's what you need," Tedford said Wednesday. "For one guy to carry the load the whole time, especially as physical as this level is, is a lot. So (we're looking) to have two and probably three backs that can provide different things for you."

Fantasy Analysis:

It should be noted that eight running backs under Tedford ran for more than 1,000 yards in college, despite sharing the carries. The team doesn't know if Mike James and/or Bobby Rainey @BobbyRainey is the better complement to Doug Martin @DougMartin22, or if they need to pick someone else up. But the point is, even though the Bucs should run the ball often in 2014, Martin probably won't be a true workhorse. Still, with about 200 carries and consistent usage in the passing game, Martin can still be a stellar RB2. He's coming back from a torn labrum in his left shoulder that ended his season in October.
