Dolphins and GM Jeff Ireland agree to 'mutually agree to part ways'

Just a day after it was reported that Dolphins intended to keep head coach Joe Philbin and fire offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, the axe fell on embattled General Manager Jeff Ireland in Miami. While it's being reported as a "mutual parting of ways", this has been speculated on since the botched handling of the Jonathan Martin/Ritchie Incognito story made headlines earlier this year. The Dolphins have also failed to reach the playoffs since 2008.

Fantasy Analysis:

ESPN's John Clayton reports that this is more a football decision than an off field one, but it's hard to ignore the constant negative media coverage and embarrassing press surrounding the mishandled bullying controversy this season. He suggests that spending more than 150 million dollars in the offseason with no playoff appearance was primary reason for parting ways with Ireland. Both surely spelled the end for Ireland in Miami.

The Dolphins nearly made the playoffs this year and with two games left were poised to take the #6 spot, but dropped the final two games and finished 8-8.
