As expected, Shanahan out as Redskins head coach

Shanahan outlasted his doubters. The man who was expected to be the first head coach removed at the end of the season (potentially as early as Sunday night) beat the odds and lasted until 10:00 Monday morning. Shanahan joins fellow firees Gary Kubiak-Houston, Rob Chudzinski-Cleveland, and Leslie Frazier-Minnesota.

While there are sure to be more, Shanahan has been the most publicized, due to a couple factors. One, he is a former Super Bowl winning coach of whom much was expected when he came to the Redskins four seasons ago. Two, there have been many reports and much speculation about a falling-out between he and Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, due to Snyder's relationship with and special treatment of quarterback, Robert Griffin III @RGIII.

The story had gotten uglier in recent weeks when reports came out that Shanahan had cleaned his office out and nearly quit after the 2012 season. However, when push came to shove, Shanahan's on-field coaching performance reflected the same likely, and now finalized, outcome that the off-field issues and rumors fueled... Shanahan's days in Washington were simply numbered.

The Redskins posted double-digit losses in three of Shanahan's four seasons as head coach and compiled a 24-40 record in that timeframe. Ultimately, after going 10-6 in the 2012 regular season and making the playoffs, the expectations for this season were too high for a 3-13 season to be allowed.

Fantasy Analysis:

For fantasy purposes, the Redskins are a very interesting team to keep an eye on. Their defense desperately needs attention, but their offense has weapons galore. If RGIII can bounce back and continue his development that everyone expected coming into this year, Washington could have a talented fantasy core of Griffin, RB Alfred Morris @Trey_Deuces, WR Pierre Garcon @PierreGarcon, and TE Jordan Reed. If the Redskins can keep these guys together, under the right coach, they could all be top 10 at their respective positions in 2014 and beyond. Garcon is the oldest of the group at 27. Morris is 25. Griffin and Reed are both only 23.
