Tony Gonzalez is a 13-time Pro Bowler, a 10-time All Pro, a member of an All-Decade team, a lock for the Hall of Fame and the most productive tight end in NFL history. So, he earned some extra time off.
Gonzalez has been spending the past couple of weeks with his family while his teammates have been laboring at training camp. But he is ready to get back to work. FOX Sports' Jay Glazer caught up with Gonzalez as he headed to the airport Saturday. Gonzalez told him that he will report to the team today and start practicing tomorrow with plans to play in next weekend's preseason game.
"It's time for me to get back there," Gonzalez told Glazer. "I need to get some work with Matt (Ryan) and the offense. I'm excited."
In 2012, Gonzalez had his best fantasy season in four years. I believe he can still be an impact tight end, even at the age of 37, especially in Atlanta's offense. But his current sixth-round ADP in 12-team leagues is too high for me. As I've said here countless times already, if I don't get Jimmy Graham, I would much rather wait on tight end and get a high-upside youngster -- Jared Cook, Jordan Cameron -- a few rounds later than a proven veteran such as Gonzalez or Jason Witten.
