Chargers HC Mike McCoy talks about playing the 'hot hand' at running back

Despite an offseason full of touting Ryan Mathews @rmathews24 from both head coach and general manager, you knew this was coming. And it's for the best, really.
Head coach Mike McCoy told FOX Sports' Alex Marvez that one thing he has learned in this league is you need to keep your running backs fresh and play more than one.
"I've been raised with (Denver head coach) John Fox in this league," McCoy said. "We always played with a couple of backs. It doesn't matter who's in there. Keep them fresh.
"That's the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll. If you've got to tap out for a play or two, we'll put the next guy in."
DeAngelo Williams in 2008 and Stephen Davis in 2003 are the only two running backs to surpass 250 carries on a Fox-coached team.

Fantasy Analysis:

Workload isn't a problem for Mathews; he's never around long enough to put on 300+ touches. And I'm sure he was pretty fresh when he broke his collarbone in the first quarter of the first preseason game last year. Mathews just hasn't stayed healthy and thus, he hasn't proven he deserves to be a "bell cow." Mathews is a low-end RB2.
Danny Woodhead @danny__woodhead will be commonly involved, and he's a good fit for San Diego's new short-passing scheme. He's a sleeper with big-time PPR appeal.
