TE Vernon Davis 'might' be 49ers' leading receiver

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area wrote Thursday that 49ers tight end Vernon Davis @VernonDavis85 "might" be the team's leading receiver once again. He was just that in 2009 and 2010. Maiocco also said second-round rookie eight end Vance McDonald should become Davis' backup immediately and "see a lot of playing time."
Davis caught 41 balls for 548 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Fantasy Analysis:

I've been saying all offseason that I expect Davis to be the 49ers' leading receiver. Anquan Boldin is safe, but Davis should catch more passes and score more often than him. He has the most proven play-making ability of anyone on that roster, and I'm not expecting a monster breakout year from any of San Fran's young wideouts. Davis and Colin Kaepernick did next to nothing together in the regular season -- 12 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown in seven games. Then things got better in the playoffs -- 12 catches for 254 yards and one touchdown in three games. I expect that postseason connection to carry over. Depending on how Rob Gronkowski's rehab unfolds, I think Davis should be the second or third tight end drafted.
