Rich Cimini of ESPN New York thinks you can "bet the rent" on Mark Sanchez being the Jets' opening-day quarterback. He acknowledges that the camp competition between Geno Smith and Sanchez is Smith's to win, but he is unsure of Smith's leadership skills and handle on the offense, especially after a "lackluster performance" during spring and summer practices.
But even if Sanchez does win the camp battle, Smith could still see some field time.
"The coaches are toying with the idea of turning Smith into what (Tim) Tebow was supposed to be last season -- a change-of-pace quarterback," Cimini wrote. "Smith would have a package of plays, mainly read-option runs that could exploit his speed."
Never mind the fact that Smith doesn't have much experience with read-option runs, and it sounds like he has enough on his plate as is. That is probably not going to work. Again, Smith and Sanchez shouldn't be anywhere near your draft radar.
