Panthers impressed by rookie RB Kenjon Barner

Carolina might have drafted a gem when selecting rookie running back Kenjon Barner out of the University of Oregon in the sixth round. Barner has shown "plenty of explosiveness and speed" according to ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas. He then speculates that the Panthers could seek to find ways to get him touches. Barner rushed for 1,767 yards and 21 touchdowns in his senior season and has limited experience as a receiver out of the backfield and kick returner.

Fantasy Analysis:

There are already a lot of mouths to feed in Carolina's backfield: RBs DeAngelo Williams @DeAngeloRB, Jonathan Stewart @Jonathanstewar1, Mike Tolbert and QB Cam Newton. Adding Barner to the mix would only further complicate an undesirable backfield committee. The silver lining for fantasy owners is that the Panthers could opt to clear the clutter after this season since the restructured Williams' contract to lower his cap figures. In the short term, Stewart is the only back with immediate fantasy value and that's being generous. Barner is a mid-round dynasty option.
