Adam Schefter reported last week that the St. Louis Rams were close to hiring former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. It turns out, head coach Jeff Fisher and his organization have decided to not hire Ryan and are back in the market for a defensive play-caller. Fisher has operated 4-3 defenses in the past while Ryan is known for his aggressive 3-4 scheme. Ryan is again looking for work and may hook up with the Philadelphia Eagles, one team currently seeking a 3-4 DC.
Fantasy Analysis:
Fisher told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that "it wasn't a scheme fit." This is all very interesting to think about. Did Fisher hope to use some kind of hybrid scheme using both formations? Was there some kind of communication between upper management and the coaching staff? Did Fisher not get along with Ryan? It's all wild speculation of course. Regardless, the Rams will need a better defense to compete in the now hotly competitive NFC West.
