The Steelers waived running back Chris Rainey
on Thursday after he was arrested in the morning for allegedly pulling his girlfriend out of a car and slapping her across the face with an open hand. He was charged with one count of simple battery.
"Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers," general manager Kevin Colbert said.
Rainey, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft, gained more than 1,000 kickoff return yards as a rookie. He rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns off 26 carries and also caught 14 passes for 60 yards.
Fantasy Analysis:
In sports, if you're going to get in trouble, you better be worth the trouble. Clearly, Rainey wasn't, but there shouldn't be any leeway given to men who commit violence against women. Rainey actually can't be officially cut until after the Super Bowl, and some teams will surely be interested in a speedy 24-year-old kick returner who can be a dual threat on offense.
