The Steelers have suspended running back Rashard Mendenhall
for one week due to conduct detrimental to the team. Mendenhall was moved to No. 3 on the team's running back depth chart a couple of weeks ago and has been a healthy scratch in the past two games. He has obviously not been happy with that decision, and his frustration boiled over in Week 14.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Mendenhall wasn't present for last Sunday's game against the Chargers after Steelers coaches told him he would not be active for the game. As a result of the suspension, the team has signed Baron Batch from the practice squad to replace Mendenhall on the active roster. He is expected to rejoin the team Monday.
Fantasy Analysis:
It's been a really tough season for Mendenhall as he's had a difficult time overcoming last season's major knee injury and then a multi-week Achilles injury this year. His body has let him down, and the Steelers made the smart decision to place two currently better running backs -- Jonathan Dwyer
and Isaac Redman
-- ahead of him. Mendenhall is obviously mad, but those are the breaks, and he needs to be more of a team player.
Mendenhall has no fantasy value for the rest of the year and can be safely dropped. Considering that he's a free agent after this season, it's likely that he has played his last down in the black and yellow.
Dwyer is the team's lead runner and is a solid flex option this week against a Cowboys defense that has a lot trouble stopping the run.
