Report: Cleveland Browns not sold on QB Brandon Weeden's future

Yahoo Sports writer Jason Cole is reporting that Cleveland Browns team president Joe Banner is "lukewarm on the prospects" of quarterback Brandon Weeden @bweeden3 in terms of "developing into a star." Firm words from Weeden's boss illuminate the possibility that Cleveland could potentially draft another quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft or pursue a free agent in the coming offseason. Weeden is now 29 years old. He is completing just 57.0-percent of his passes for 2,820 yards, 13 TDs and 15 INTs. Cleveland is 4-8 and all but mathetically eliminated from playoff contention.

Fantasy Analysis:

Well, it can't really be argued that the Browns had no other option. Seattle is thriving with rookie QB Russell Wilson @DangeRussWilson who was selected 53 picks after Weeden. The Yahoo article suggested they should be proactive in pursuing Michael Vick @MikeVick should he hit free agency. Cleveland's offensive line really provides them a solid backbone to build upon. RB Trent Richardson and WR Josh Gordon are both having good years as well. Weeden has been a serious drag on this offense though and may not have much of a future in the NFL.

Now that McCoy has sat a while I'd love to see him come back out and see if there is any change. I wanted that guy to succeed, but the Vick idea is pretty interesting as well. Give that guy a solid line and he could do a lot more than he has.

From what I've seen of Weeden, his play this year alone wouldn't merit this kind of reaction if he was 23 instead of 29....but the Browns knew how old he was when they picked him in the first place. Seems weird to backtrack on it before a full year's even over. I didn't think Weeden was worth the first rounder, but I've already seen him make more NFL throws this year than I've seen McCoy make.

Weeden is the guy. The upcoming draft is the weakest in years and the Browns have pressing needs on defense particularly at CB. Vick is not the solution nor is any other washed up QB. Weeden will play and in a year or two the Browns will draft a "developmental" QB to take over sometime out in the future.
