Head coach Pat Shurmur benched running back Trent Richardson after eight carries Sunday when it became clear, at least to him, that Richardson's rib cartilage injury was hurting his on-field effectiveness. After the game, Richardson admitted that he is still being hindered by the injury and said it is worse than people think. But he still thinks he'll be able to play Sunday against the Chargers, and Shurmur will try to get him there. Shurmur said Monday "We're going to get [Richardson] ready to play each week" and go from there.
Fantasy Analysis:
I guess that's encouraging, but Richardson still seems to be questionable to play in Week 8. He will be at least limited in practice, and Montario Hardesty
, who ran for 28 yards on seven carries against the Colts, will be waiting in the wings to take over the majority of the carries if Richardson is rested. My gut feeling is that Richardson will tough it out once again, but if he continues to run as he did yesterday, Shurmur will have to consider giving his rookie stud runner a break.
