The Chargers website houses the team's official depth chart. If the latest update is legit and not part of an October 3 version of April Fools Day, then San Diego's starting running back is Jackie Battle, followed by Ryan Mathews
.
Fantasy Analysis:
The Chargers made a bunch of noise last week about Mathews needing to curb his fumbling habits, something he did in Week 5. He also came off the bench against the Chiefs while Battle picked up the early touches. Now this. For the moment, temper expectations on Mathews this week despite the incredibly tasty matchup against the Saints. Heck, against that horrid run defense there should be enough production to go around; Battle was already a worthy pickup and potential bye week flex option in deep leagues. As for the long haul, Mathews remains the better bet for fantasy goodness, assuming talent wins out. Hang tight or jump in with a buy low trade offer assuming you can afford to wait and see what happens. Certainly all Mathews owners should be add Battle when possible. Right now, not sure what the Chargers are doing, but this cat and mouse game is veering into Shanahan territory. That's a scary place for fantasy owners.
