- Streamer of the Day - Jhoulys Chacin - Owned in 40% of Yahoo! Leagues
Chacin has already been featured in this space a few times and has continued to pitch well (2-0, 1.96 ERA) this season. Control problems and a dramatic drop in strikeouts were the main issues for Chacin in the past but ever since coming off the disabled list late last season, Chacin has corrected them and looked like a completely different pitcher. Chacin has pitched well against Arizona (3-2, 2.81 ERA) in nine career starts and will face the Diamondbacks at home today.
Yesterday's Streamer of the Day: Tony Cingrani - W 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 8 K
2013 Streamer Quality Start Record: 12-4
Friday's Streamer of the Day - Scott Kazmir - Owned in 3% of Yahoo! Leagues
What Happened Last Night: Fantasy owners will be seeing plenty of both Tony Cingrani and Jose Fernandez in the future and got a glimpse of both yesterday. Cingrani picked up the win in his first career start, edging Fernandez who was rocked for five runs over four innings on the road at the Great American Ballpark.
What exactly is wrong with Matt Cain? We wrote off his implosion in St. Louis as a fluke and he went seven strong innings in his last start, but now after getting blasted for seven runs on seven hits over six innings against Milwaukee, there is cause for concern. Home runs have been an issue for Cain early this season, he gave up 21 last season but has given up five already. I wouldn't sit Cain, but it is difficult to trust him in any matchup after his struggles.
Finally R.A. Dickey is pitching like the reigning N.L. Cy Young award winner that everyone paid for on draft day. Dickey left after six shutout innings with back issues, which will not prevent him from making his next start, but gave up only two hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Today's Lineup Card: There are plenty of quality starting pitching options for fantasy owners today. If you take a quick look at the FFToolbox rankings for today, I would recommend any pitcher inside the top 23. I have little hesitation starting any pitcher inside the top 23 but no desire to start any pitcher beyond that point. The top 12 pitchers in our rankings are all no-brainers, so here are a few quick notes on the mid-tier starters for today.
Andy Pettitte is dealing with back issues and there is no guarantee that he pitches as well or as long as he did in his first two starts, which should put Brandon Morrow in the drivers seat at home today. Morrow has pitched well against the Yankees (5-2, 3.68 ERA) in 11 career starts so I feel good about his chances today.
Tim Hudson is consistently one of the most underrated pitchers in fantasy baseball and will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Wandy Rodriguez today. The Los Angeles Dodgers will send Hyun-Jin Ryu to the hill against the Baltimore Orioles and Jason Hammel today. Ryu has looked good in his first two starts and is worth trusting on the road against an American League opponent.
Roy Halladay is the biggest question mark of any pitcher today, but has the advantage of facing the St. Louis Cardinals at home. It's hard not to trust Halladay after a solid start against Miami his last time out, but approach with caution.
The starting pitcher rankings and analysis above are all my opinions, use your best judgment when it comes to setting your lineup, its your team after all. If you have a fantasy baseball question or comment, feel free to follow me on Twitter @GeorgeBissell.
