MLB - Fantasy Baseball - Weekly Injury Report
It was a light week in the injury department across baseball, the only major injury from a fantasy standpoint was the strained hamstring suffered by Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals. Here are all of the inuries and their implications from a fantasy standpoint that fantasy owners need to be aware of going forward.
Hitting the Disabled List
Ryan Zimmerman - 3B - Washington Nationals - Left Hamstring Injury
Zimmerman hasn't exactly been an ironman throughout his career. The Washington Post summarized Zimmerman's injury problems perfectly on April 20th: "In both 2011 and 2012, Zimmerman landed on the disabled list in April. Two years ago, he tore an abdominal muscle that eventually required surgery. Last season, Zimmerman missed 15 days with an inflamed shoulder joint, an ailment that eventually required offseason surgery. Zimmerman also landed on the disabled list 2008, and in 2010 he missed roughly 20 games with injury despite never landing on the DL." Top prospect Anthony Rendon was called up to take Zimmerman's spot at the hot corner on a temporary basis, he will reportedly be sent down once Zimmerman returns in a few weeks.
Aaron Hill - 2B - Arizona Diamondbacks - Fractured Hand
Aaron Hill, who was batting .306 with a pair of homers and six RBI, is out 4-6 weeks with a fractured hand. Cliff Pennington will slide over to cover Hill's post at second base with Didi Gregorious getting the nod at shortstop. There are plenty of quality options out there on the wavier wire at second base. I tout Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis repeatedly every single year and he never disappoints. This season, Ellis is batting a rock solid .311 with six runs scored, seven RBI and one steal. He doesn't offer much power, but Ellis is not a batting average liability, which is a nice bonus for as an injury replacement stopgap.
Jhoulys Chacin - SP - Colorado Rockies - Strained Back
A crushing blow for the Rockies, Jhoulys Chacin was in the midst of pitching a seven inning shutout and had just eclipsed 100 pitches against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he was forced to leave with an apparent lower back injury. Chacin is 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA in four starts this season and has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners this season, but is expected to miss at least two weeks with a lower back strain. The main concern here is that the injury derails Chacin for an extended period of time or possibly lingers and he never returns to the form that has made him such an effective pitcher this season.
Chad Billingsley - SP - Los Angeles Dodgers - Elbow Injury
Fantasy owners might not see Chad Billingsley for awhile. Billingsley was place on the disabled list on April 21 with right elbow pain and the rumour at this point is that he might need Tommy John surgery. Billingsley experienced elbow problems last season but opted not to have Tommy John, he may not have a choice now.
Dayan Viciedo - OF - Chicago White Sox - Strained Left Oblique
A strikeout machine with huge power upside, Dayan Viciedo was placed on the 15-day disabled list over the weekend with a strained oblique. Viciedo injured himself swining at a 96-mph high fastball from Esmil Rodgers and isn't expected to miss more than a few weeks. Viciedo was struggling, batting just .229 with a pair of homers prior to the injury.
Franklin Gutierrez - OF - Seattle Mariners - Hamstring
Gutierrez is dealing with a hamstring injury that could require a stint on the disabled list according to Mariners manager Eric Wedge. Gutierrez was off to a hot start batting .259 with four homers in 16 games this season. Gutierrez is only expected to miss a few weeks, but there is no guarantee he comes back and produces at the same level he was prior to the injury.
Octavio Dotel - RP - Detroit Tigers - Right Elbow Inflammation
A valuable right-handed specialist, Octavio Dotel was placed on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation on April 23. Dotel had reportedly been dealing with stiffness for a few weeks and was finally shutdown. Detroit called up flamethrower Bruce Rondon from Triple-A to take his spot in the bullpen. At age 39, Dotel is coming off arguably the best season of his career last year but is no longer worthy of being owned in any fantasy leagues at this point.
