2009 MLB Team Preview: Tampa Bay
1B Carlos PenaLast year's numbers were disappointing to the Rays, but Pena is a solid offensive player who should put up 20 to 25 homers and around 90 RBIs.
2B Akinori IwamuraA very tough player who plays with a football mentality. He lacks range, but is otherwise a very good middle fielder. Will strikeout a lot and his OBP is a mere .349. Not enough for a projected leadoff man.
SS Jason BartlettGood for about 20+ steals but he has zero power. In only 128 games he totaled 1 HR, 48 runs and 37 RBI's. Avoid on draft day unless in the deepest AL-only leagues.
3B Evan LongoriaThe 23 year old reigning AL ROY should continue on the fast track to stardom. Had a poor average in the postseason, but did blast 6 homers. In 2008, he had 27 home runs even though he spent two weeks in the minors and a month out with a fractured wrist. He doesn't have the track record yet but the sky's the limit.
C Dioner NavarroThe first time all star in 2008 has the contact skills to remain productive in '09. At 25 yrs old, he'll be starter worthy if the power numbers improve.
CF B.J. UptonNot many people expected his power to drop off like it did (9 home runs in '08) but the 40 plus steals sure make up for it. IF the power comes back, look out.
LF Carl CrawfordCrawford is coming off a down year riddled with injury but this perennial 20 homer 60 steal outfielder may come at his cheapest price this year
LF Pat BurrellHe moves from one loaded lineup in Philly to another in Tampa Bay. He will be a consistent source of cheap power for fantasy owners.
DH Pat BurrellPat the Bat comes over from the World Champion Phillies and will likely be the every day DH for Tampa Bay as his glove is suspect at best. Burrell hit .275 with 23 home runs in the first half of 2008 but struggled in the 2nd half posting only 10 dingers. The change of scenery could result in a 30 homer campaign and should enable him to stay healthy.
SP James ShieldsOne of the leaders of the Tampa Bay World Series run, there are concerns about how he can handle his record amount of innings pitched.
SP Scott KazmirKazmir has always been a guy who will miss at least one month out of the season but when he does pitch he is electric.
SP David PriceSpeaking of scary potential, Price displayed his on the World Series stage last fall. A rotation spot has been cleared for him and he is ready to go.
SP Matt GarzaI suspect somewhat of a drop-off in Matt Garza's stats as young pitchers do when they pitch deep into the playoffs. Still a top 50 Sp though.
SP Andy SonnanstineSonnanstine was a reliable 4th starter for the Rays last year. As a fantasy player he won't hurt you but won't help much either.
RP Troy PercivalA veteran on the downswing, Percival's fastball has loss a few miles and had a less than spectacular ERA (4.53). Could lose his job this spring.
