2009 MLB Team Preview: Florida
1B Gaby SanchezSanchez is a rookie with tons of potential. He had good power numbers in the minors. Should hit for average too. Has an opportunity to shine with Florida's lineup.
1B Dallas McPhersonDestroyed the Pacific Coast League pitching last season with an amazing 42 HRs. It's probably too early for him to make any significant contribution, but he projects to be a top 10 talent in a few seasons. Keep an eye on him.
2B Dan UgglaUggia possess a quick bat and the power (averages 30 homer the last three seasons) to go with it. He does strikeout a lot, which is why he will probably be number 5th hitter for the Marlins. He is better the average defensively. Has quick reflexes which helps his otherwise poor setup.
SS Hanley RamirezAt 24 years of age, Hanley's power/speed combo makes him a sure fire top 5 pick in 2009. He joined the 30-30 club in 2008 while stealing 35 bases. The sky's the limit for the Marlins leadoff hitter and a case could be made for taking him No. 1 overall on Draft Day, especially considering A-rod's recent steroid allegations.
3B Jorge CantuHis 2008 was a bounce-back year and he's still pretty young (27). His all-or-nothing hitting approach makes for streaky performance but he is penciled into the cleanup spot for the Marlins which should provide a ton of RBI opportunities.
3B Dallas McPherson*The promising source of cheap power has 35+HR potential and should get a chance to play everyday in 2009 for the Marlins. The 28-year-old hit 42 home runs at Triple-A Albuquerque proving he deserves another shot as a big-league starter. He'll never provide a high batting average but could a sleeper in 2009.
C John BakerThis late bloomer could be this season's Ryan Doumit. Baker is a late-developing 28-year-old that posted a .299 batting average to go along with an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio. He could win an everyday job and will at least start against right-handed pitchers. His upside is limited but could be worth the gamble as a # 2 catcher.
CF Cameron MaybinMaybin is a candidate to serve as the Marlins lead off hitter this season. His contact ratios need to improve to prevent another stint in Triple A.
RF Jeremy HermidaHermida is the very definition of a post hype sleeper. If the injury bug doesn't get him again he could be this year's Ryan Ludwick
SP Ricky NolascoNolasco came out of nowhere to post better numbers than some of the guys on this board who are ranked higher. After this year everyone will know who he is
SP Josh JohnsonJohnson posted a 7-1 record having come off of Tommy John surgery last season. This guy does nothing but win when healthy.
SP Chris VolstadLittle is known about Volstad except for the 2.88 era he put up in 84 innings last season. However Florida has a knack for developing pitching.
SP Anibal SanchezIt seems like a long time ago when Sanchez threw that no hitter his rookie season. Consider him a deep deep sleeper here as he is young enough to rebound.
RP Matt LindstromLindstrom is another setup man, but has what it takes to make it to the top of the list one day. He's great at keeping the ball down (only 3 HR out of 529 batters). An up and coming player.
